It says a lot about where things have gone, or are going, that a Christian pastor asking a president to be merciful to vulnerable and marginalised groups (which is Jesus’ whole message as far as I was taught at mass) is seen as unbelievably brave. And that is not to say that it wasn’t.

I’m old enough to remember the ‘80s, the fall of the Berlin Wall, apartheid and the USSR. But did it seem possible at the time that almost 40 years from then it would be the USA lead us into the new regime?
