so, is that substance user truly unwilling to 'help themself'? or has the cruel calculus determining the material circumstances of their life caused such a degree of psychological mistreatment that it warranted lifelong inurement?

rehab facilities, as completely brutal and miserable as capitalism renders them, aren't devoid of that core line of thinking either.
substances - whether stigmatized or provided by your psych - bring psychological safety to minds that cannot be self-balancing due to the circumstances they are in.

not groundbreaking science either. rehab facilities place a lot of safeguards around potentially-suicide-enabling-things because they know that without the curtain of using, someone may genuinely not have capacity to meet their need for psychological safety. That has serious consequences.

whatever material or social detriment substance usage brings, in terms of "how likely is it that I make it through the day", one's psychological safety and wellbeing factor in just as much as physical safety or wellbeing. physical safety doesn't necessarily obviate the risk of suicide.

obviously, our society stigmatizes certain substances orders of magnitudes more than others, but stigma alone doesn't explain why people who use or overuse substances rely on them, even when it comes at material or social detriment... because material analysis explains this.

so, so much of the time, substance users aren't just using because they know they "feel better" when they're using - they're also using because they can tell that they're psychologically safer than facing certain situations without the use of that substance.

I don't think that's an entirely inapt assessment in some contexts, but for drugs, it's also framed in cruel terms. Who on this earth is unwilling to help themselves? Nobody. Farcical+foolish to claim otherwise. Reading the statements substance users make themselves blatantly shows this to be a lie.

"finding the idea of being a woman hot is perverse" no, it's a calling to a higher purpose. A credo. A sacrament. A rebirth.

I buried the man they tried to make me into so I could lay down my life for womankind.
That's my sexual fantasy, and I'm living it.

The difference is just that I'm willing to admit that "living out your sexual fantasy" is a vital human need, and doing so in a society designed to stamp out that light and joy is indeed revolutionary.
