An Aussie migrant living in the Yorkshire dales that still struggles to understand how some British people think. Believes Brexit was a terrible idea driven by fear and division, and that no problem is as permanent as the solution.

If only the British press and media knew this…

All media is complicit - even you @peterstefanovic.bsky.social Simple way to combat FArage and his mates… If a tree falls in a forest and there is nobody there to hear it, does it make a sound? You are all amplifying messages of intolerance and providing legitimacy to his outrageous nonsense. Stop!

Why does nobody ever mention the LibDems? Just a question, not an endorsement.

Tell that to google and social media that pump out endless “influencers” living fantastic lives in foreign lands and then google shows them how to walk there.

Asylum seekers only comprise 1.2-1.8% of total migrants Statistically irrelevant.

Oh.. this old chestnut. This is the fault of successive govt failure to build or invest in anything - not migration, and we certainly won’t have enough resources, houses and services if we do not have immigration. A different tune please.

When friends/people complain about migrants I let then know (strongly) that I am a migrant. "No you're not" "Yes - I have a visa to prove it" "But you're the type of migrant we want" "?" "You know - you're white and speak English" Conclusion? They are against migration because they are racist.

Simples… the Murdoch press would crucify them. Labour have been in opposition for to long and are being led by populist mantra. They cant fight reform on reform’s terms. They need to be bold or lose the next election.

Ha! I think the Brexit arguments will not cease until it dawns on everybody that was not a very good idea and we do more to form much closer ties.

YES! It is about having a sensible approach towards the numbers coming in, but Starmer has capitulated to Nigel nd it has become "bash a migrant".
comment in response to post
I live in Yorkshire - haven't seen a "British" doctor in the 9 years I have lived here. 🤣 The NHS employs 265,000 foreign staff and would collapse without them.
comment in response to post
Starmer should sack his advisers. Labour have been in opposition/election mode for too long. They have forgotten how to govern.

This could go on forever, so I politely refer you to me original post which was about the need for both strong, meaningful policy and education to combat the rise of Reform. Pandering to Nigel by cancelling a visa stream will not accomplish anything. It is a game that will never end & can't be won.
comment in response to post
... and while we wait the 10-15 years for this to actually occur? You and I are on the same side. It is better policy that is needed, not "bash a migrant". And when I last checked, AI can't wipe a demented patients arse, though it does present an interesting idea for a start up.

Some light reading for you all. High skilled an low skilled migration most likely has a positive net affect on the UK finances - not negative. Don't believe the murdoch press machine. migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/br...

Australia struggles, so does Canada, US and many others - and not one has discovered a way to reduce net migration and mange workforce and economic demands. Regardless of the search for a solution - 97% of migrants should be treated with respect as they are needed (skilled/low skilled).
comment in response to post
The best way to reduce net migration is for British citizens to do the jobs that they currently think beneath them, but this means increasing pays (if that would work) and many business models could not survive. Issue is extremely complex - why nearly every country in the world has failed.
comment in response to post
There are four primary groups of migrants. 1. Those with skills the UK needs (like me - 38-39%) 2. Those that will do jobs that UK citizens won't (care workers/HCAs/NHS/hospitality etc. 59%) 3. Super rich (add nothing nor pay tax ~1%) 4. Illegal (1.2-1.8%) Point is, remove cat 2 & replace how?

I repeat - it is about effective, clear, meaningful and purposeful policy. It is NOT about knee jerk reactions and picking a fight that nobody has one - ever. It merely feeds the Reform machine.
comment in response to post
I am unsure I know of anybody being forced to share their homes. This is about effective migration policy that meets the requirements of the UK and its citizens. It is NOT about division or hatred or right wing dogma that the UK press and Nigel peddle to the Murdoch press machine.
comment in response to post
Reform has no plan other than division and hate.
comment in response to post
Govt is correct that the policy is poorly formed, and trying to reduce net migration is a losing battle in the UK, EU, Australia, Canada and the US. Govt is stuck in opposition mode. They need strong clear policies communicated effectively which will deliver for the UK as a whole.

I pay both personal and corporate tax!! And I employ many British people. I believe my presence in the UK is a positive.
comment in response to post
I totally agree that the care worker visa was abused (mostly by UK employers) and this is definitely a failure in policy. My point was primarily about the populist reaction to the reform party that in reality has no plan other than divide and conquer. As they say - you can not fight fire with fire.

You can not win against Nigel/Reform if you insist on playing them at their own game. Govt should counter with educating the general population of the benefits migration brings instead of demonising some of the most vulnerable. Who do they think will be wiping their arses when they no longer can?

Sacrilege!! Nobody in Australia would eat these imposters. There is only one Tim Tam - chocolate. Chewy Caramel - no way! BTW they taste surprisingly like penguins - not quite as sweet/sugary, but the principle is the same.

I have not commented on what the UK govt should or shouldn’t do. My original comment was about business was principles. Always judge a deal by who is offering it, not what is being offered, and mutual respect is paramount.
comment in response to post
I also doubt that a trade deal with the US is going to make a significant difference to the UK’s trajectory.
comment in response to post
I would not do nothing. I would try to stand up to the bully rather than cave in to demands that may change in a whim. I would rather set my goals on establishing strong trade relations with countries that can be trusted to honour and respect the terms.

I’m an Aussie and watch AU media closely. He wants AU to take US beef which AU classifies as a bio security risk as they import from Mexico and Canada. On top of that, AU is a major exporter of beef far beyond what is consumed in country. AU does not need it. Stalemate. www.abc.net.au/news

I don’t disagree, but maybe we should stand up? The White House claims there are hundreds of countries calling every day wanting to do deals. Who? Certainly not Europe or China. Where are the deals? He loves publicity but has failed to waive all his new deals to his adoring entourage. Are they real?
comment in response to post
Quite surprisingly, I agree with President Xi. The world needs to unite and stand up to the bully he is. Capitulation merely reinforces his belief that what he is doing is right. There will be no winners until the bully realises his behaviour is wrong.

Since the orange turnip has no respect for the trade deals that are already in place with nearly every country in the world, why does the UK think that a new trade deal will be any different. First rule of business… look at the person offering the deal before considering its value. He has no honour

Actually just freedom of movement. Bring it all back!

Freedom of movement for youth but also self-funded retirees. What the harm?

I would assume this number is approximately equal to the number of MAGA supporters that are classified illiterate? Check this out from an old Australian show - very funny. youtu.be/hvOYjzXgZgo?...
comment in response to post
The MAGA supporters won’t know where any of these places are anyway - but they will be happy.

Here’s a hint…. They have run out of money because UK business no longer have the EU as a trading partner without the burden of never-ending paperwork and regulations that were manifestly misrepresented by a lying charlatan. No business = no tax income. Join the dots - it ain’t rocket science.

Not the first time this untalented toad has stolen another person’s idea - creative or otherwise.

And it is all made in CHINA !!!

How about self-funded retirees as well? It would reduce the burden on the NHS.

This is closer to the truth.
