I’ll try to unpack some of this essay because there are many points & ideas here. Firstly: hard to overstate the scale of this moment for the EU. “our Europe is mortal. It can die,” Macron warned last year. The EU originated as a peace project, developed in Atlanticism and later, globalisation.

Also this is obvious but in a world in which more of the "western" power alliances are splintering even as other dubious great powers rise, the global South has somewhat more leverage. Tho whether that leverage gets harnessed to anything useful or good is a completely open q

More importantly, as always, SPD is NOT the main supplier of new AfD voters. Most new AfD voters did not vote in 2021 (not only first voters!). Right-wing parties CDU and FDP were main suppliers. Despite hype, BSW took virtually nothing from AfD.
