And it’s not even sour grapes on my part. I’m often cited. But I’m also often the only one cited.

We can both say this is representative of how incredibly White most of these outlets are and that Wikipedia very often relies on primarily White critical viewpoints even when Black critics have reviewed the film for major outlets.

Like… I love these critics. Most of them are my friends, but c’mon lol

These movies aren’t being judged on the same scale. The scale is specific to the movie.

This from @812filmreviews.com is especially interesting to me. I wonder if Mary's role could be a rebuke of the expectation that mixed people are different depending on their surroundings. If Mary had been allowed to be all that she is all the time, then she wouldn't have been seduced.

Thank you for the kind words, Elon! This was a fun back-and-forth me and Odie got to do.

It's funny because the second my review went live I knew I was going to get blowback, even though by RT standards it netted out as a positive. It's a difficult thing to have in the back of your mind.

But also there's this impulse that Black critics need to agree about Black films for fear that if we're not united then we're somehow undermining the Black creative who made the film. In actuality, having deep, complex and differing conversations about Black film is healthy.

Podcasts have sorta replaced this, but it's nice when critics talk to each other about their reviews. It normalizes diverse opinions and takes away the impulse that we all need to think the same way or that reviews should only exist as marketing.
