We are increasingly concerned about the crisis in UK Higher Education. Read our joint statement with @royalhistsoc.bsky.social , History UK and the @histassoc.bsky.social https://buff.ly/4hSg16N #history #skystorians

Your periodic reminder that until economies get to net zero global temperatures will keep rising right up to and beyond the point where the Earth becomes practically uninhabitable for human civilisation.

🗣 Hear all about it – the work of the Talking News Yorkshire’s Talking News network brings local news to blind and partially sighted listeners, powered by volunteers and evolving technology. ♥️

Notice how it’s always “the Bible must inform our laws!” until it comes to the verses about welcoming the immigrant, helping the poor, feeding the hungry, bringing healthcare to the sick, forgiving debts, not charging interest, caring for our planet, laying down our swords, or loving our neighbors.

Great news! @labourlewis.bsky.social's Water Bill will have its first debate on 28th March. This is our unmissable chance to put public ownership of water back on the table. Ask your MP to be there and back the Bill: actionnetwork.org/letters/ask-...

Makes sense to invest in #sustainabiity - and here's the evidence. Just like it makes sense to invest in #arts and culture which generate vast amounts of tax. All of this life-affirming as well. Why wouldn't you?

In light of everything happening, I wrote about how the KKK in the 1920s felt unstoppable, about the people that fought against them anyway, and about how fascism always fails. dansinker.com/posts/202…

We've created a new Starter Pack of #History institutes and research centres in the UK & Ireland bit.ly/3F3Eo2M Please do share. There will be gaps and recommendations are welcome. We hope this pack helps you keep in touch with work by and for historians in the UK & Ireland #Skystorians.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, I really hope this reaches you today.

“We can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist” James Baldwin

A friend from the VA just sent this and asked me to share. PMDB is Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior in the workplace. THIS is the real war against women: being forced to say there are only 2 genders but not being allowed to mention 96% of violence is perpetrated by men.

Saying you have insight into your problems usually stops them from calling you thoughtless, inconsiderate, or stupid. This comment lets the other know that you’re merely one step away from solving your problems and they need not intervene. www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/perf...

This is such an important and helpful read. I want to keep up with what’s going on but feeling so overwhelmed and want to switch off. I know I mustn’t, so I like the concept of categorising the many different actions into 3 buckets and priorities to aid understanding.

Words To Live By Number 185

We might yearn for paradise, temporal or spiritual. But to our descendents our habitable planet will look like an almost unimaginable paradise. No tech fantasy, no space station or controlled environment will ever compare. Fight for what we have. This is our heaven, and there can be no other.

A 10-year-old has a better plan for stopping plastic pollution than most politicians. Amaya Edwards discovered an Australian scheme that’s keeping rivers and oceans clean. So why hasn’t the UK adopted it?

If Labour approves the Rosebank oil field, it would be the final straw for many of its green-minded voters. It might appease corporate power for a moment, but in doing so it will lose far more than it gains. The government seems to be on a self-destructive streak. Now's the time to rethink.

Climate action globally is under threat. It’s hugely urgent to seize initiative from rightwing populists. We need to change tactics: start by building climate resilience in local communities where people can feel tangible benefits – we’re calling it climate popularism. @rupertread.bsky.social & me🧵

“An exhilarated hatred now parades as freedom, while the freedoms for which many of us have struggled for decades are distorted and trammeled as morally repressive ‘wokeism’.” Judith Butler on the first few weeks of Trumpism

A crucial read for anyone who wants to know how to stop a repetition of US style sell out in the U.K. Of course Labour and Starmer need to step up to the plate, our part? Write to them, lobby them, keep up the pressure for Labour to start serving its voters and not its donors!

Incredibly moving Justin Trudeau remarks: "We have fought and died alongside you....During your darkest hours...we were always there. Standing with you, grieving with you, the American people....Canadians are a little perplexed as to why our closest friends and neighbors are choosing to target us."

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance. Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.

Trump's inauguration should mark a turning point. Time for the UK to stop trying to ride the US's coattails and start working with those who share our values and want the things we want.

Please consider signing this important petition. History as an academic subject must be protected from cuts, like all the humanities. They help to make us human.

I was struck this morning by the sense of dire urgency expressed by Dame Glenys Stacey, Chair of the @OfficeforEP, on the need to quickly ramp up efforts to get on track to meet legally binding Nature goals. Time is running out, & so is Nature. www.theoep.org.uk/report/gover...

This is chilling! Thank you for writing it. @carolecadwalla.bsky.social

Not flying doesn't mean not travelling! There are so many options for holidays without flying, and with the whole of Europe on our doorstep, there's a lifetime of adventure right here. Take the #FlightFree2025 challenge today and see where staying grounded could take you... flightfree.co.uk

This is IMPORTANT: A new report finds "that a broad range of contaminants in sewage sludge could be harming the UK’s soil ecosystems and the wider environment." www.hutton.ac.uk/hidden-threa... Please do share!

It is truly wild that it is estimated that more than 20 million people died of Covid and the prevailing vibe is that the world overreacted. That is an astonishing toll! More people died of Covid in the US than in the Civil War. www.pbs.org/newshour/hea...

Psychoanalyst Nancy McWilliams notes that shame becomes adaptive “by regulating experiences of excessive and inappropriate interest and excitement and by diffusing potentially threatening social behavior.” It works to curb self-absorption and immorality. www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/perf...
