The far right is only an issue where it can be exceptionalised, & serve as a proxy & scapegoat for mainstream illiberal racism as 'hate' & anti-democratic politics & practice (or be used in a 'both sides' argument). 2/

Yes, in that it is trendy and flattens things out (and academics are parsing and debating it), but unlike populism, no mainstream actors will democratise and seek to campaign for or represent it in name.
