The killer app is fraud.

but how can you bill for completely re-engineering a political campaigning infrastructure if you don't completely abandon the previous one?

If you're using LLMs to write R code, @simonpcouch.com's blog posts are the best way to keep up with which model is best

Here’s what I’d like to see: Harvard, Columbia, Yale etcetera rescind the degrees for any current administration official who works with the government to dictate what these institutions teach. Because you can’t collaborate with domestic terrorists.

sir what you are referring to “left-wing threats” is students and professors exercising their own free speech, which was treated as a national emergency by lazy-brained blowhards in the media, vs. actual censorship, visa revocations, firings and imprisonment only one of those things is a threat.

a reminder that tesla is a publicly-traded ponzi scheme

well, in a coffeeless- and office hour-induced haze, i did my first accidental substack subscription. lesson learned.

the way you fix NTMs (among actual trade barriers are the more relevant factor these days) is through negotiation and harmonization. read: agreements. fixing factor endowment and taste differences is a whole other thing, but it's domestic industrial policy. trade wars do neither.

It certainly looks like Elon Musk’s henchmen stole all the data from the agency which protects workers rights, tried to cover it up, and then threatened to kill the guy who blew the whistle on it.

i try to impress upon students that the best feature of computers is determinism, despite the frustrations it sometimes creates.

sorry, for unaware friends: CVE is "Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures", a database of hardware & software vulns that pose major security risks to individuals, corporations, & governments. loss of this resource is a massive concern for information security, especially in the current environment

Literally BREAKING

UMich Friends: If you were a grad student, you know the work GEO does for grad student workers. They're holding a Workers Gala to celebrate 50 years of GEO and raise a Solidarity Fund to support members and fight the good fights. If you can, please consider supporting: bit.ly/GEOWorkerSolidarity

This is a crossover episode I've thought about pursuing, but the urge has faded and my wallet thanks me for it. Cool, but rare and very pricey in the secondhand market.

Vance and I are the same age. I didn't serve, but he did. I remember the US of 2003. I remember the backlash against Chirac and France. I'm uncertain how he can have such a mistaken memory of events at a pivotal time in our lives, unless he's lying performatively for his own political interests.

love too have functioning institutions

put it on a t-shirt

Amazing for three reasons: 1. redundant encoding can be good in some accessibility contexts 2. aesthetics can make a visual more distinct and memorable 3. there are some great strategies for complex encodings in here too

In data visualization design, we often assume the goal is to minimise the effort required to 'see' the data. And that adding support a title and annotation is the route to memorability. But sometimes making something more effortful achieves memorability and understanding more effectively...

We've reached the point in our descent into fascism where the Jewish governor's house getting firebombed on Passover by a guy trying to bash his head in with a sledgehammer is overshadowed by the story of the President saying he wants to build foreign gulags for US citizens.
