23. they/them. writer. "'cause i'm too tired, to be honest. and i'm too hurt to pretend." letterboxd for my Art Takes @ JamesIsTired. Extremely Normal about Riverdale. incapable of being anything but serious and sincere. character limits were a bad idea.

archie andrews is a kind of anakin skywalker, a passionate man & born warrior who loves too much, marked by fear & grief from the loss of his parent, turning all too often to reckless violence in an attempt right the wrongs of the world. sebulba is a kind of hiram lodge, in that his suit doesnt fit

the theory that time itself is gay in Riverdale might be one of the best Riverdale theories ever. peak. it's also just a very funny and insightful article!! i knew it was gonna be good when the first sentence was "[Riverdale] *is* that deep." mmhmm. Harper Rochel Goldman GETS IT.

this genuinely might be one of the best things on Riverdale i've ever read, thank you for this.

genuinely stunning how incredible the finale is in terms of writing, like it achieves SO MUCH in such little time, which isn't unusual for Riverdale but the finale in particular is just so utterly perfect.

genuinely a perfect criticism of comics and sort of the inherent nature of storytelling in the comic medium, but also the modern age, where you can repeatedly rewatch media and keep forcing these characters through the same troubles over and over instead of letting them grow up and move on.

It's not "the girls fighting" because the girls would be funny and mean. It's the two rich old men pawing at each other because neither has ever had to actually sharpen their wit.

only potential upside is maybe Wan comes back to make another one, but good god, if we're about to get Saw sequels pumped out by Blumhouse,,,, oh, the franchise is in for a rough time.

anyway, there's definitely a bunch of things it could stand to improve, but man, i had fun. the narrative was engaging, the writing was interesting, the twist was neat, like for 6-7 hours, that's really neat as a detective game. excited to see what the new mode is.

and i know hands are hard. i understand. but the specificity with which they are wrong feels more like the lack of understanding of a machine compared to the lack of skill of a human. this is particularly noticeable in the family photo from the 70s.

where she's like smiling but her teeth are like escaping out of the corner of her mouth and that feels like it would be an AI artifact but the developer claims no AI was used in the Steam version of the game so? it's just weird. plus there's still a few hands that are just weirdly drawn.

in that you can at least see there's a cohesive style in a bunch of them, but uh. there's still some weird oddities that just feel like somewhere somebody slipped up. like there's a portrait of i think Lauren, or maybe one of the Gwyns, —

if there was a better way to play with the controller and if the art was a little better i could see myself scoring it a little higher. but the art is a little weird like kind of uncanny and I know the itch.io version used like dogshit gen-AI "art" and this one is kinda better—

oh. hm. i mean. feels like a weird ending. weirdly sticking to "reality" in a way i don't think necessarily is earned by the rest of the narrative. but. uh. sure. like a really good 8.5/10.
