The Democrats can govern, which is something that the Republicans can't right now. We need to figure out how that's best sold to the American people, because our product is genuinely better than that of the GOP.

Without due process, you don't really have rights...

This isn't the American ideal. It's up to us to live up to it.

The best argument against any particular brand of tyranny is that you don't really get to choose what brand of tyranny you get. Every tyrant and every wannabe subject will try to obfuscate that...

Ironically and scarily, MAGA is hellbent on making America less American... They hate minorities because they think that "E Pluribus Unum" isn't American. To that end, they're willing to throw out the Constitution, democracy, the rule of law, personal freedom, equality, and other American ideals.

Honestly, Trump's stupidity might be one of our greatest assets in preventing him from toppling the republic...

Honestly they're no different than any of the other swathes of Trump voters who were evil enough to dismiss that he's a fascist and dumb enough to believe him at his word. I feel bad for the Gazans though; the ordinary people who now face an actual genocide incited by Trump and backed by Bibi...

Maybe, but I'd call it a benign oversight at best. I don't think that misogyny was the intent here...

Every MAGA accusation is practically a confession...

Best parallel: "states rights" wasn't embraced because Lost Causers wanted to preserve individual liberty by stymieing the concentration of power through checks and balances. They invoked it to oppose federal efforts at expanding liberty because they really didn't like equality and personal freedom.

It's not about fiscal responsibility or the wellbeing of the American people. It's about fetishizing needless cruelty and making the world safe for fascism out of a fundamental disdain for the liberal roots of America and the free world.
comment in response to post
If MAGA is defined by their consistent embrace of cruelty, the commies are defined by their hypocritical insistence on replacing the least bad systems with ones far worse...

The good thing about government of and by the people is that it's really the only way you get government for the people. Without democracy, you can't really get your leaders to act in a way you'd like them to act.

Thank you for your comments everyone. It's comforting in this dangerous era to be in a community that communicates with each other. I appreciate you, and all of the #Resisters on Bluesky.

Emphasis on "person". The 5th amendment doesn't say only citizens have that right; no person can be denied due process. Defend the 5th!

The 5th amendment doesn't say that only citizens cannot be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law. It says that no person can be deprived of such. Defend the 5th!

Biggest problem with the Dems, imo, is that we can't sell our generally good policies. We can govern, but for some reason, half the country is brainwashed to hate us for that...

I'm not surprised that he's being a protectionist nut. Labor unions aren't the biggest fans of free trade, even if it benefits consumers. They're not a moral good or evil; they're just self-interested like any company is. I'm surprised that he's licking Trump's boots. Didn't expect that from him.
comment in response to post
There is some need for labor power. They did and do push for a lot of important workplace rights. That said, there's nothing that says they cannot be wrong about policy. This one is evidently fine screwing over millions of Americans just so his industry doesn't have to deal with foreign competitors.

I'm not surprised that he supports tariffs. Unions advocate for their employees just like companies serve their investors. Neither are inherently more moral or good than the other. It's not surprising that he opposes competition. Didn't expect him to start licking Trump's boots, but here we are...

I think it'll go down like the 1932 Bonus Army controversy: a cruel display of military force in the midst of economic hardship. Hopefully it'll result in the kind of Democratic landslide in 2028 that FDR got in 1932.

Tbh, any finance bro who voted for Trump is probably not worth their salt. Not only because "you tried to murder America", but also because "damn, you fuckers got swindled by the world's most obvious swindler". Voting for Trump is like crypto; I'm not taking financial advice from anyone who did.

Anything unconstitutional will probably get struck down, and anything too shady will probably be discovered. America is a big country, and I don't think he can get away with rigging an election - though that doesn't mean he won't try...
comment in response to post
I'm sure he'll try, but rigging a U.S. election is not exactly an easy thing to do. He can make it harder to vote in petty ways, which is bad, but I don't think it can stop the Republicans from collapse if they're going to keep "governing" like this.

It's not an ideal situation, by any means, but it might be a workable one. If Europe can act where the U.S. won't, like with Ukraine, then the harm of Trumpism might be lessened.
comment in response to post
As bad is Trump is, I don't see U.S. interventionism fully going away. He orders tariffs like they're his 3rd breakfast at McDonalds because he likes the vibes of manufacturing. He also hates Europe. At the same time, he's probably fine with bombing the Houthis and may back Taiwan if China invades.
comment in response to post
Admittedly, that isn't much. This isn't an ideal scenario, but it might be a workable one. If Europe can act where the U.S. won't, like with Ukraine, maybe the damage Trump can do will be lessened.

He's also crazy incompetent and driven by the impulse to "own the libs".

The Reagan coalition was neoconservatism, fiscal conservatism, and social conservatism. Trump abandoned neocons and fiscal cons, who abandoned him if they're worth their salt. Trump, imo, represents social cons who don't care about the Constitution, democracy, free markets, etc. He's a fascist.

Everyone needs to call GOP members of Congress and tell them to #ImpeachTrumpNOW or #EnactThe25thAmendment It will take 5 minutes per call. Save this country and save the future for our children! Do it TODAY! Congress switchboard: (202) 224-3121
