Please share this fact sheet on Ukraine with anyone who needs it understandingwar.org/backgrounder...

So you think Russia is winning in Ukraine? The Bright bright red is what Russia took in 2024. Almost nothing, and it cost them hundreds of thousands dead. Slava Ukrainii

Some newspapers are acting as if they were solely a commercial enterprise, without the mission to uncover and report on the truth. It is us, the readers who have to make our judgment and use our critical thinking to understand the world. Sadly, the @nytimes.com has become a clickbait generator.

Now that Ukraine has become very active in the Kursk region, we would like everyone that hasn't found us on BlueSky, to be aware of the latest updates. Therefore, we would like to ask you to share this post in order to reach as many people as possible. Let's aim for 75.000 followers 👍

I’ve literally had to sit on my hands to hold back from calling out these two atrociously orientalist articles. But if stuff like this doesn’t get called out, reporters who appreciate nuanced (and informed!) reporting will struggle to push back when asked to frame stories in the same way.

The Russian disinformation network “Matryoshka” has launched a new campaign on Bluesky. Eliot Higgins, founder of the investigative journalism group Bellingcat, has been one of the first researchers to detect its activity. So far, four Russian-made fake videos have been identified on the platform.

“If we’re waiting for the ‘real’ war per our past time’s definition, we may not recognize the enemy is fighting war against us now.” A good piece on responding to Russian, Chinese and Iranian hybrid warfare from @maxboot.bsky.social www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

Peter W. Singer really knows his stuff. Thanks for sharing, Mick! And all the best for 2025.

“According to an estimate by the China Media Project, he [Xi] published 120 volumes in the first decade of his rule. This year at least nine have been added to the pile (“Excerpts from Xi Jinping’s Discourses on Natural Resources Work” is hot off the presses…).” www.economist.com/china/2024/1...

Interesting review of Russian media monitoring. I like the first third and the last fifth of the blog post. Only wondering when people in Russia will have enough of their system and how that could come to Change.

Oh, here, too 😀 Choose 20 books that have stayed with you or influenced you. One book per day for 20 days, in no particular order. No explanations, no reviews, just covers. #BookSky 💙📚 #Books #BookChallenge Lázár Ervin: A négyszögletű kerek erdő (The square around forest) Day 1/20

This made the rounds a few weeks ago, pre-Bluesky video, but now it needs to be here. No idea who created it, but here's David Attenborough narrating the "evolutionary disadvantaged" Cybertruck.

I swear Tim Walz is so good at this.

The EU wants answers from Hungary about work visas for Russia and Belarus

Don’t stop talking about Ukraine 🇺🇦 Stand With Ukraine 🇺🇦 Ukraine WILL Win 🇺🇦

Today was another massive attack by russia combining missiles of many types. A few hours later I still don’t see any major western media reporting that russia damaged Islamic Cultural Center and mosque in Kyiv. Please follow Ukrainian media #UkrainianView united24media.com/latest-news/...

😳🚫 Wow! Verkhovna Rada banned the activities of the Moscow Patriarchate on the territory of Ukraine, — people’s deputy Zheleznyak ❗️The communities of UOC MP will have 9 months to break ties with the Russian Orthodox Church.

The Ukrainian operation in Kursk is almost into its third week. How might Russia respond in the coming days and weeks, and what are its medium and long term options for dealing with the Ukrainian incursion into Russian territory? My latest at Futura Doctrina. mickryan.substack.com/p/the-kursk-...

Interesting profile/interview w/ David Keith in the NYT about solar geoengineering. The article hints at what my main objection to this line of research is, but isn't explicit, so here's a quick thread on my thoughts... www.nytimes.com/2024/08/01/c...
