I'm incredibly saddened that I have to start looking for other jobs. Not because I am sure that I will be terminated in a few months, but because there is so much uncertainty about my situation that I cannot risk having my family's healthcare and childcare endangered due to an abrupt termination. 🧵

www.nature.com/articles/d41... All these are good initiatives, but let's not forget they can quickly become subject to Goodhart's law "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure".

@academic-chatter.bsky.social hey folks! Lovely to find you all here! I am running a session for PhD students next week and I’d love to show them why you are on this platform as an academic. #AcademicChatter #HE

Scary thought: are university staff (academic and other categories) public sector employees in the US? (They are in Ireland) Could this crazy purge start on the universities next? What about school teachers? @academic-chatter.bsky.social

I recently wrote a blog sharing my reflections from a NASA open science training we (@DUTC) held at Johns Hopkins University (@jhuartssciences.bsky.social). Researchers from diverse disciplines joined the training.

We all know science is a disaster. That means we have two choices: 1. Whine and complain. 2. Imagine and implement the solutions we imagine. There is no third option. #OpenScience @academic-chatter.bsky.social

Put your hand up if you've ever seen a succinct and understandable explanation of 'ontology, 'epistemology', & 'axiology', INCLUDING contextual usage in simplified ways. If yes, where? #AcademicChatter #PhDsky

This is entirely anecdotal, but has anyone else found it a lot more difficult to find academic literature about queer and trans research recently? I've definitely noticed a difference on the typical search engines I use like Google scholar and Jstor. @academic-chatter.bsky.social

Do you use federal statistics? Please share your feedback regardless of whether you are a federal statistics novice or a seasoned power user. We welcome examples of how you use federal statistics, suggestions to improve both the data & user experience, & more. gmu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_...

Today I spent 13 hours editing my factual book (multilingual families); hyperfocus may be a superpower but also a problem for the aging body as I have hardly moved. I’ve just put a gym weights session, walking, and yoga in the diary for tomorrow! #writersofbluesky @academic-chatter.bsky.social

Say what you will, but finishing an EU-funding application leaves a person drained of everything... @academic-chatter.bsky.social

I am doing a review for a science foundation in an extremely well functioning democracy. The budget overhead is 85% Overhead is part of the science ecosystem! NB: I am not a fan of high overhead. But I *am* a fan of systems that are reliable and trustworthy. @academic-chatter.bsky.social

Public notice: If you want to read a research article, please don't pay for the paper on the publisher's website. All that money goes to the publisher, we don't get any of it. Instead, contact us. We'll be happy to send you the paper :-). @academic-chatter.bsky.social #OpenScience

@academic-chatter.bsky.social Im curious how universities would deal with the NIH IDC cuts (although will certainly be stayed)- IDCs (at my place) don’t go to colleges or investigators and central has great authority as to how they spend. Theoretically- where would they cut?

Early morning question: How will the new faculty recruitment process unfold for a Black FEMALE scientist seeking a faculty position in the US now? #AcademicSky @academic-chatter.bsky.social

Anyone know if it's possible to get inspection copies of books in physical form for accessibility purposes? I find it much easier to engage with and process information in physical books 📚 @academic-chatter.bsky.social #AcademicChatter

Mental health thread! @academic-chatter.bsky.social Every few years--thankfully only every few years--I have a bout of severe anxiety and freezing up. It becomes a consuming fear of nearly everything that runs through me for a few weeks. Someone told me once...

Quick question for my #AcademicSky people: have you also notice a massive increase in spam emails about fake conferences and journals? I've gone from like 5 per day, to 30+... @academic-chatter.bsky.social

I'm in search of good books to teach undergrads how to start their journey into creating a research study. I know there are too many options, but there might be something I haven't seen and I should pay attention. It doesn't matter the field. #AcademicSky @academic-chatter.bsky.social

Working on my research proposal is making my head spin. Will I ever get used to this? #AcademicSky @academic-chatter.bsky.social

"The reviewer(s) have suggested some substantial revisions" SOUNDS GREAT 🎉🎉 #AcademicSky @academic-chatter.bsky.social

@academic-chatter.bsky.social Any tips for tools that accurately summarise a lot of information? I sometimes struggle to process a lot when I'm reading so it would help to have something to summarise for me as a starting point (but without environmental impact of AI etc.) #AcademicChatter

Intellectuals and science people, I need your advice! What, in your opinion, makes a research idea worth investigating? How do you recognize an idea as worthy when you hear it? #science #research #idea #society @openscience.bsky.social @openscience.software @academic-chatter.bsky.social

With the storm raging across the UK today, I made sure to pack my office essentials yesterday so I could work from home today. Unfortunately there was no room for the laptop but you have to prioritise happiness over productivity sometimes 💜 #AcademicSky #AcademicCHatter

Indeed, a lot of money is often needed to do great things in #science. However, not all science needs funding to be worth doing. It might not have much impact, but satisfying one's curiosity and sharing it with others is good for the soul. #academicsky #researchsky #academicchatter #researchlife

Community, hi! Anyone here would have access to the digital version of "Still Saving the Mediterranean?: Expert communities, regionalization and institutional change" (2019), by J. Balsiger? I cannot find it through the usual means... Thanks a bunch! #AcademicChatter @academic-chatter.bsky.social

Calling all #psychometricians & #researchers 📣 Does anybody have good resources/articles that compare & contrast psychometrics and “clinimetrics?” Is this a case where we’ve made up field-specific verbiage or is there a meaningful difference? Anything would help! @academic-chatter.bsky.social

Reflecting on a recent moment of making a mistake based on “not knowing what I don’t know” as an early career scholar. I hear this happens a bit too often esp as related to prepping diss research for journal pubs / interdisciplinary work. Thoughts on possible solutions? @academic-chatter.bsky.social

I am feeling neither festive nor academic this week, but I cannot yet escape Santa or the obligation to stay employed. I started making these seasonal/academia Venn diagrams to help me cope with both. It isn't working but it's something to do innit 🎄 #AcademicChatter
