I see from on here that David Brooks is back on his bullshit which offers me another occasion to post my short, entirely imaginative work that seeks to understand how such a mind comes to be. biblioracle.substack.com/p/the-road-t...

you don't need to be jacques lacan to see how desperately transmuting material loss into symbolic gain is really just slapping a fancy new signifier atop a yawning black hole but hey it doesn't hurt

Bill Ackman freaking out about tariffs and saying "this isn't what we voted for" is as clear a crystallization of conservative self-delusion as you could ever ask for. Yes it is you idiot, you voted specifically for this! He talked about this NON STOP

Feels like only yesterday that it was "hysterical" to say American citizens would by next (might have been last week though)

HEY REMEMBER THIS?? bad-faith-times.ghost.io/we-need-to-s...

I think we don't talk about the massive amounts of political assassinations in the US in the 20th century because it worked.

chat, is there anything in christianity about forgiving the people who killed your son

Finally getting back to finish a story I started writing nearly a year ago, and I thought the difficulty would be getting back into whatever groove I was in at the time and continuing from there, but the real struggle is trying to decipher whatever it is I'd scrawled into this notebook.

Later this month, @techwontsave.us turns five years old. It’s hard to believe I’ve been making the show for this long! Over that time I’ve interviewed hundreds of guests to spread critical perspectives on tech far and wide — and I know it’s had an impact.

Scam "literary agency" Envision Literary Agency is impersonating Penguin Random House with fake publishing offers, via the email below, using the fake email address [email protected] 🧵1/8

a great way to riposte allegations of being a coastal elite might be to actually name the cities in Utah and Idaho these rallies took place in rather than just stick the names of a couple red states on a poster full of blue cities

On a financial and probably spiritual level, I understand that I do not need the $40 Arby's Metal Dice. But I can't help but think of what a power move it would be to rock up to the table and pull out my $40 Arby's Metal Dice.

The "the GOP won't really try to steal the next election" crowd haven't even grappled with the fact they're literally trying to steal elections right now. apnews.com/article/nort...

1/4 Well look at that. Open Ai and Google outright reject “Opt-Out” models, hell they even reject basic transparency requirements. AI companies demand they get everything, including our Intellectual Property, for free, and without anyone ever being able to tell the companies no.

The United States is currently a country where you can be kidnapped by secret police and shipped off to a slave labour concentration camp without ever being charged with a crime or getting a chance to argue your case in front of a judge. If you think it can't happen to you, why do you think that?

i have learned that way too many americans see the concept of 'freedom' simply as the potential to be rich and privileged, even if they aren't, & not things like freedom from dying from a preventable illness if you're poor, or being imprisoned for minor crimes, or persecuted by the police, etc

We don’t have to - and must not - place scholarly writing and popular writing in opposition. Doing so is a losing move. Writing exists in many overlapping genres and we get to work in and out of the ones that fit.

It's true, from June 2024 when it dawned on me that Super Sad had nailed the dystopia, only in this case it was the viral trend of filming the Chipotle worker making your burrito that brought the novel to mind. biblioracle.substack.com/p/which-book...

what if this was the fault of people who were uninvolved and had no influence on policy—but are people I actively dislike?

“Don’t use academic language” I’m not an academic. Academic prose is nothing like what I write. This anti-intellectual insistence on oversimplifying everything is what makes everything seem shallow. People long for a “real” that’s been trivialized away from our lives by everything being superficial.

it's their religion. people are drawn to faith because it offers a sense of comfort and meaning in a universe of absolute chaos these people cling to their dream of an AI future because offers them an eternity where they remain on top, and their greatest sins are forgiven by a machine genius

I have tariffed the penguins that are on Heard Island and which you were probably assuming did not export goods forgive me they were taking advantage of us so cunning and so cold

musk is not Trump's Schacht he's Trump's Hugenberg. the rich dipshit who spends a couple months as economic dictator purges the administrative state gets fired and spends the rest of the rich grumbling in his isolated fiefdom

I'm not on twitter anymore, but this tweet from 2 years ago is sadly more accurate than ever

italians are about to invent a form of corruption so lucrative it will destroy the global economy

This person helped build the "AI" that's intended to be used in the federal government, and they are saying very clearly that everything I have been trying to warn you about is true. Read this thread if you have the time and are in an okay place.

tabletop gaming is going to be one of the first industries to just get nukes as a result of these idiotic tariffs

Enjoying the creepy DEAD RINGERS-esque energy in this LRB profile of the Barclay brothers: www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Is it impossible to write a headline that conveys the truth that Trump doesn’t give two shits about “antisemitism” and is clearly using the issue as a pretext?

find this very funny because I know a bit about the one place the US can produce coffee domestically at scale. It's in the middle of the Pacific and it was illegally annexed. It's a 6-hour flight from LA. It produces 5 million lbs of green beans per year. US domestic consumption is ~3.2 billion

“Take out the equivalent of a mortgage at 18, but here’s the best part: you’re also going to jail”

At the gym, getting pumped to classic American literature

This idea that there is a god given right for fascists to always be allowed to run in elections because somehow democracy is threatened by not allowing fascists to run for office is profoundly stupid, dangerous and makes people sound patently insane. Fascists want to kill democracy. That is all.

i’m tired of this argument positing that progressives should strategically embrace bigotry. some of us want to live in a world that isn’t hateful, in which every human being is treated like a human being. this should never be an unpopular opinion, i think. conceding to hatred doesn’t help defeat it.

biggest disappointment of my adult life has been learning that almost no one actually adheres to the ethics they claim to believe in, and i don’t mean small “no ethical consumption” concessions or compromises, either. i mean claiming to love people but bootlicking the institutions that oppress them.

so true. it’s cooler to be demonetized rather than censor yourself and inadvertently downplay someone’s whole lived experience.

I had no idea you guys had this! Adding it to my podcast rotation

I would like to have a president whose brain isn't mush for a change...

hell yeah brother
