San Diego has become the fifth big city in the United States to ban landlords from setting rents with the help of algorithms built on private data. www.kpbs.org/news/living/...

“I’m Still Here” illustrated this beautifully, I hope more Americans see it.

NEW: Andrew Cuomo used ChatGPT to help write the housing plan he released this weekend, which included several nonsensical passages. The plan even cites to ChatGPT on a section about the Rent Guidelines Board. hellgatenyc.com/andrew-cuomo...

This was a great listen. We all intuitively know that urban highways rip communities apart, but now we can show it empirically. One finding I found particularly interesting is that the social barrier created by a highway persists even when the surrounding demographics completely change.

In a country where loneliness is an epidemic, freeways might contribute to fewer social conditions. Great episode unpacking an important paper adding to the huge evidence about the negative impacts of urban freeways.

A conversation on our work on the destructive effect of urban highways on social ties (www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...). Thanks @acbowen.bsky.social for the lovely chat!

Feeling lonely? Blame a freeway! New Freeway Exit bonus episode just dropped. Hear me talk with @lajello.bsky.social about his landmark study on how urban highways impact our ability to make friends. www.kpbs.org/podcasts/fre...

I went one of San Diego’s least walkable neighborhoods to test how long it takes to get from one side of the street to the other — when there’s no crosswalk. Check out this video to see the results! www.instagram.com/reel/DH9Qc3h...

New “Yes in God’s Backyard” project in North Park just dropped! 78 units — 41 of which were technically “off-sited” from market-rate projects nearby. My latest on San Diego’s emerging market of affordable housing credits: www.kpbs.org/news/living/...

Take my hand as I guide you through San Diego's new (draft) Street Design Manual and what it does — or doesn't do — to build a safer, more sustainable and more livable city. Been working on this one for a while, hope you enjoy! www.kpbs.org/news/public-...

Texas Republican Keithself storms out of the meeting he's supposed to be running because a Democrat asked him to treat his colleague Sarah McBride with respect. These people would not last one day as a trans person.

Awesome reporting from @calmatters.org on a program in San Diego that organizes group bike rides for people experiencing homelessness. calmatters.org/housing/home...

San Diego institutions will spend millions to avoid asking people to take the bus.

A driver failed to yield to a pedestrian attempting to cross 6th Avenue from Balboa Park into Banker’s Hill. The crash left the victim with life threatening injuries — a severe brain bleed and fractures to his leg and pelvis. #VisionZero

We've confirmed the US Bureau of Prisons has transferred trans women to men's prisons despite three court rulings blocking Trump's executive order “I’m continuing to be punished for existing. I'm a pawn in others' political games" -Whitney, 31-year-old woman taken to men's prison this week, told us

Driver struck a 46-year-old cyclist from behind on Genesee Ave in Clairemont, then fled. Crash left the victim with a fractured spine, collar bone and ribs. Police believe the vehicle is a red VW Jetta possibly with damage to the front bumper. #VisionZero

Driver in a white Dodge Challenger (pic for reference) struck and killed a 69-year-old man on Hancock Street between the trolley and I-5, then fled. #VisionZero

Councilmember Jen Campbell held up a picture of an ADU development in Clairemont yesterday as an example of poor design. I was at that exact ADU complex on Friday and spoke with a tenant, Sarah Agudo. She told me she loved her home and is glad it got built. My latest: www.kpbs.org/news/politic...

Leon Williams, San Diego's first Black city councilmember, died Monday at 102. I had the honor of interviewing him a few years ago about his role in stopping Highway 252, which would have destroyed the neighborhood of Southcrest. After a MARATHON meeting, San Diego City Council just voted 6-3 to ask for changes to the city's ADU bonus program. Goal is to remove certain zones with large minimum lot sizes from the program first, then have a more comprehensive package of reforms later this year.

I've counted three anti-YIMBY orgs in San Diego organizing public comment in support of repealing the ADU bonus program tomorrow (this time, property noticed). YIMBY Dems are doing the same. Meeting starts at 10. I suspect it'll be a long and fiery one 😵 Background: www.kpbs.org/news/local/2...

Wowsers. San Diego City Council President Joe LaCava has docketed a vote next Tuesday to repeal the city’s ADU bonus program. Earlier today, the item was to *rescind* the council’s repeal request in order to neutralize a Brown Act complaint. Background: www.kpbs.org/news/local/2...

San Diego took a step toward a $25/hour minimum wage for the tourism sector today. My latest: www.kpbs.org/news/economy...

I would love to invite the traffic engineers that worked on "traffic calming" at the intersection of Fern & Grape to spend just 10-15 minutes observing the efficacy of their interventions so they can see how 90% of drivers treat this new striped area as a right turn lane
