He's wanted in the US for tax fraud. That's why he came to Belgium.

I kinda prefer the Soup expression on the 2023 one.

It's a way to pay you more without taxing you more.

Maaltijdcheques are not taxed. It's considered "non-taxable income"

Complaining about Belgium is what Belgian do best (according to Belgians) but yeah it's pretty great here ♡

You'd have to ask a pro on the specifics but it's a tax dodge for both the employer and employee so a bit of a mutual win.
Pretty sure it's not mandatory, but the highly unionized Belgian workforce expects it and will wreck your shit if provoked.

Yes it rolls over. You can also spend it at restaurants and food delivery.
Most folk would prefer to have the full value of that €40 to spend on groceries than an extra €40 in their paycheck that will be taxed. 🤷♀️

Google would probably serve you better for ACTUAL info but as a general vibe, it's better than the US right now.

Had that perk working full time in the US for my whole adult life.
Mean very little when one medical emergency leaves you 5-10k in the hole and you have to take out loans against your 401k to cover expenses.

They pay me less by giving me €40 a week in money that I can ONLY use on the basic necessity of food. Tragic
I'm spending it on beer in protest.

Extra food money AND the food is affordable?

You're not taxed on meal vouchers so it's a way of giving you more "pay" without the taxes.
It's like €7 a day for a person with no kids so if that amount is affecting your ability to pay rent, you've got bigger problems.

Using my meal vouchers to buy a six pack of beer, a bag of chips and a bottle vodka is the most freedom I've ever felt.

1. Easier than it is to gain legal residency in the US. Heckin easy if you have a Belgian willing to sponsor you.
2. Lol yes but in a different way than Americans. In the city of Antwerp 1 in 10 are of non-belgian origin so even if there are racists and bigots many places are still really diverse.

The key is that the kind of people who vote against paying taxes aren't great at math because there's no taxes funding the schools.
