here's one of my favorites from a couple years ago. I'd be overjoyed if one of my photos helps out an artist!

to be fair I'm not sure many people can imagine a more harrowing ordeal than a 36 hour flight with no wifi

hell yes, goodbye to the shitty awning shrine

between this and the dogshit marching I'm wondering just how much of this was intentional

I haven't been up that way either! can't go wrong though, I hope you have a great trip

had the same experience driving out here for the first time for a summer internship. La Grande to Pendleton on I-84, losing almost 4000ft of elevation in 10 miles and suddenly the Columbia basin rolls out like a welcome mat. like what... where the hell am I? anyway I live here still 13 years later 😂

those are some great pics of some of the most surreal looking country I've been through. cheers from the valley to the west!

this is insane dude. "what if we did the sociopathic Venmo default sharing growth hack but for people's innermost thoughts"

I watched it for the first time recently, in part inspired by your posts about the training. the memes were right. what a piece of craft!

can't wait for screenwriters to get all the "I saw Game of Thrones" out of their system

nope, "ultralight" has a different meaning here. LSA is roughly equivalent to European ultralight

most people use the engine to get up without a tow and then shut it down to glide, and as a safety net in case they fuck up the soaring part and have to turn it back on. but you can also just get in and go places; my friend landed his at PDX last month
comment in response to post
a fun little loophole is that they fly real good, some of them even using gasoline and an engine. you only need a glider license to fly this, not even a drivers license like LSA
comment in response to post
congrats on solo, that's a huge accomplishment! maybe book a weekend to finish up at Williams? though one of their instructors just left so they're at lower capacity for a bit
comment in response to post
hell yes, soaring rules. got my add-on in March but still haven't gotten checked out with my local club 🥺 I am fiending for a tow

yeah, some forms of diabetes are sadly a do not issue. my medical exception was for other reasons, so I don't recall the criteria offhand, but I think it's oral meds only with an A1C threshold. you can rent light sports for fun btw, though flying is never cheap. eg www.flytwinoaks.com/n311cc
comment in response to post
you could probably fly a light sport unless you've actually applied for and been denied a medical cert! they're real-ass airplanes, just with some restrictions on max weight and speed

congratulations!! a truly unforgettable experience

is he ever not? I thought it worked like how we're always on at least fpcon bravo but sometimes bump it up and increase our vigilance
comment in response to post
hah! well, let's not rule it out. but pilots get bad at what they do very quickly if they don't do it, so they gotta keep doing it even if there's no other particular reason
comment in response to post
training! they like coming to my airport after dark, I assume to practice NVG landings and stuff bsky.app/profile/acfo...

hey! unfortunately I am not aware of any current openings, but if you keep an eye on Computational Biology at the careers page, that's where they'll show up in the future: talent.stjude.org/careers/jobs

thank you, my friend!

aw, thank you Michael 💜

I'm part of a small but growing vanguard of remote employees at St. Jude, so I'll be staying in belovèd Portland

if that's the case, I hope they're planning to redesign them to serve as a user's guide. they currently are more concerned with laying out the typographical conventions than providing a way to quickly look up unknown symbols or study them in related groups

FAA doesn't typically put out hard copies themselves, third party vendors print and sell. so this means both going away I believe

had one myself two flights before my checkride 😬 I've since realized that learning from the bad days without dwelling on them is a really important skill. we all want to be the best and it stings when we don't live up to that 💜 but all that a day like this means is that you're a pilot 🫡
comment in response to post
yeah, I just mean that it's unlikely the info will be out of date anytime soon even if they're no longer publishing it. so, hang onto the last copy and have a moment of "can you believe they stopped updating this?" with your examiner if you have to use it
comment in response to post
I doubt they're going to change much immediately, so hanging onto the pdf should still be good for upcoming rides. But oof.
comment in response to post
yep! that's exactly the one. the perfect one to have bookmarked on a checkride when the examiner tries to stump you with some obscure lighthouse symbol or something
comment in response to post
still available in ForeFlight, at least! I definitely do not use them on a regular basis though. it'll be sad to not have new VFR wall charts but the rest of these make some sense given modern tools. the ACUG though? yeesh
