My postdoctoral fellowship application is due this Saturday, March 1st. My postdocs have done exceptionally well on the job market, so get your applications in! I accept postdocs that already have jobs-- note the position is full-time & in-person at Stanford. postdocs.stanford.edu/prospective/...

Massive encroachment by Bezos into The Washington Post’s opinion section - makes clear dissenting views will not be published I still have not felt encroachment on my journalism on the news side, but if Bezos tries interfering with the news side I will be quitting immediately and letting you know

I did it y'all! I swam for a whole hour this morning. Now, to just get my distance up on the way to that mile! If you never knew anyone with active brain cancer who could research, teach, dean, and workout 5 days a week, now you do!

Medicaid is not for sale. NASA is not for sale. The Post Office is not for sale. America is not for sale. We have an obligation to resist kings. We outnumber them. And they can be overwhelmed.

Happy Friday! 🎉 This spring, we’re hitting the road! 🚀 Catch the BAD Lab at these upcoming conferences, sharing our research on black language and culture👇🏾 If you’re attending, let us know—we’d love to connect! ✨ #BADLab #BlackAcademia #Linguistics #EducationResearch #Conferences #HigherEd

I thought about writing a long, fancy essay, but I'm a keep it simple & to the point: When I got to Stanford, I very intentionally put Black in the name of my lab & every course I created. You work with me you researching Black, you take a class with me, Black gonna be right on your transcript.

Out here breaking that half-mile swimming mark! I did a solid 50 minutes of swimming! Next up: a full hour!!

LSA joined dozens of scholarly societies in signing a letter that begins, "American science and innovation have advanced humanity for generations... But today, science is under threat." We commit to championing integrity and conveying the importance of science. unitedsciencealliance.org

Nobody at Stanford University did nothing the last hour while we waited on our Doechii tickets! Now we can go back to work!!! LOL Frost Amphitheater bout to be bumping!

Happy Valentine's Day, Everyone! Let the rage and love in our hearts lead us to justice. #FridayFeeling

Been thinking about this poem a lot. I learned it in school. I wonder where that is even possible now. If We Must Die by Claude McKay If we must die, let it not be like hogs Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot, While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs, Making their mock at our accursèd lot.

Some higher ed organizations who are loudly circling the wagons against federal funding cuts were oddly silent or circumspect about the earlier attacks on CRT and DEI. I wish there was a better understanding that these attacks are coming because we failed to repel those.

“I have come to wonder whether these expressions of despair and surrender are really masking an irrational longing for a magical way out of this nightmare - a hope that some deus ex machina will swoop down and spare us what we are facing.” open.substack.com/pub/sherrily...

Seriously, if you can’t understand Kendrick Lamar, you need to take my African American English course. I’ll teach it again in the fall. #TheyNotLikeUs

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out. Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation. Say equity, which a just society should pursue. Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.

If you're really going to be free, you have to overcome your love of wealth and your fear of death. — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Yes, everyone is correct. They're not advocating for a "strict meritocracy." Affirmative action is over. They're now suing over the very presence of Black people and Latinos in elite education and white collar careers. They're advocating for resegregation. Call it out every time.

As the Trump administration & many state governments appear poised to accelerate attacks on higher education as a public good, the AAUP urges colleges & universities to resist the coming onslaught of political interference & defend the core values of higher education. 🧵 www.aaup.org/news/against...

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.” University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.

For academics who need a little hope tonight. I went into the Stanford bookstore today, & my undergrad research book was right out front. There was 1 copy left. I’m so honored to be speaking at our big Stanford undergrad conference this spring. We can’t give up. We have come too far. #BadLab #WMSURE

NSF grantees - people who have already received their grants based on a previously funded and approved research proposal - are being told to stop any activities related to DEI and accessibility. Call this what it is: government censorship of ongoing research projects. www.opm.gov/policy-data-...

My op-ed: "Colleges and universities ... seem to be hoping that their muted responses — and affirmative acquiescence — will spare them. ...This sort of acquiescence will not only fail to protect institutions, but will expose all of us to further repression." stanforddaily.com/2025/01/28/f...

I rely on federal funding to do the research that is part of my job. I have been federally funded by NSF and NIH my entire career. I have educated students, and that funding helped people become teachers, professors, and all-around good people.

I believe in inclusion because I am not a segregationist. I believe in decolonization because I am not a colonizer. I believe in trans rights because I believe all people have human rights. For more, see pretty much everything I’ve ever written or edited. #MondayMotivation

How does anti-Blackness affect Black Women Educators with 4C hair? @eghosaobaizamomwan.bsky.social tells her story of personal and pedagogical development through Bantu knots, box braids, locs, and more. Read it now in the #HarvardEdReview: https://bit.ly/3VBs7Z3

My cancer is back for a third time. Again, in my brain. My oncology team is optimistic that it is from the pause I had to take from treatment to allow my heart to heal. I'll scan again in two months to see if there is progress.

A reminder that I have an open postdoctoral position for next year. The deadline for application is March 1! postdocs.stanford.edu/prospective/...

We're excited about this new edition of Jane H. Hill's Everyday Language of White Racism. Collaborating on this book update with Barb Meek and Christina Leza has been wonderful. www.wiley.com/en-in/The+Ev...
