Hi Buff! Westminster Abbey. It was in 1st post, but I put it in photo alt text, 1500 char limit. I checked, & see I misspelled Abbey as Cathedral 8v/ We were leaving after a crowded service & were lucky to get a quick snap. Leaving, it is on the R wall, closer to the entrance than midpoint of nave.

Deep Survival is a great book. I was first drawn to it for the adventure - survival stories, but ultimately it led me to Epictetus, the Enchiridion, broader study of Stoicism, and how one can manage a wide variety of psychological challenges.

Darwin had the volumes of Lyell's Principles of Geology shipped to him as they were published as he voyaged on the Beagle. Perhaps D's great insight in formulating his theory of evolution was applying Uniformitarianism to what he observed in living things.

William Whewell (1794-1866), cited here a few days ago (Darwin's bday, the day after International Day of Women and Girls in Science for coining the word Scientist to describe Mary Somerville) on Uniformitarianism: The catastrophist constructs theories, the uniformitarian demolishes them

My favorite Uniformitarianism example to use with students is how we know there was liquid water on the Earth's surface four billion years ago: Pillow basalts form today at sites of submarine eruptions. When we see pillow basalts in Archean rocks, we can be confident they erupted underwater.

The most spectacular rocks of the Semail Ophiolite are so-called 'pillow lavas'. These structures form when lava erupts below sea level: the lava quickly cools from the outside, but keeps flowing on the inside. Cut them, and you get a pile of pillows. Good for a rest day!

I am happy to be off the former bird site, but I miss Harry Hew and a few others. Thanks for posting.
