“You can always edit a bad page. You can't edit a blank page.” ― Jodi Picoult

Our (Americans) understanding of WWII is so fucked up. The role America played in the rise of Nazi Germany through its own eugenics policies and the vast amount of sympathy for the German project are something that hasn't been fully conquered in our own institutions.

In occupied France, people would drop their used matches folded into a V, as a secret sign of resistance. People who opposed the Nazis would see them, knew they weren't alone, & felt emboldened to take action. Some modern day equivalents here--small but powerful actions you can absolutely do:

In light of everything happening, I wrote about how the KKK in the 1920s felt unstoppable, about the people that fought against them anyway, and about how fascism always fails. dansinker.com/posts/202…

If only there was a "theory of history" based on one "great man" and then another. Have we ever tried such a theory? What would we call it?

To me, a Nazi salute means, "I want to murder your family." There can be no irony about it: It puts deep anger and hatred in my heart to see it done and I will never forgive anyone who justifies or minimizes it.

This week in class, my students are learning about the Reconstruction (and post Reconstruction disenfranchisement), and we discuss when the U.S. actually became a democracy (or got closer to it). Many people argue around 1965, but I try to argue that it's actually closer to 1975. 🧵 /1

The young vote in Germany, by gender. 😳

If you're trying to figure out what to do right now, my advice is to just pick a thing that you think might be useful in some way, however small, and do it. Doing a thing leads you to doing another, bigger thing, and prepares you for that next thing.

And these 2 PhD students are ready to go, the 3 other scientists are cranking and we love them 🥺♥️, but we NEED more support! From volunteers, to org support, we’re calling on the scientific community! JOIN US! SEE YOU IN DC Y’ALL 🫡 @standupforscience.bsky.social

It is so *weird* living in a new reality that most people can't even see. Million of people think they're still living in a world that no longer exists. Wildly disconcerting times.

I just added my name to the list of Jewish leaders printed in the NYTimes saying no to ethnic cleansing. If you’re Jewish please consider signing on to oppose ethnic cleansing being done in our name www.saynotoethniccleansing.org

All other presidential regimes, consider moving to a parliamentary system before it is too late: time.com/6958382/case...

Hi, hello. In order to grasp the significance of Trump crowning himself a King, you have to understand that he is literally carrying out a plan crafted by Curtis Yarvin, a right wing extremist, to overthrow democracy and replace it with dictatorial rule by a monarch-CEO.

Again: I don’t think the primary goal of the anti-D.E.I. authoritarianism we’re seeing is re-segregation. It’s TOTAL human enslavement to corporations. Re-segregation is just a stop on that train. Explicit white supremacy and patriarchy are being used to make techno-fascism seductive to the masses.

Next, they'll claim that all of this (Trump's "LONG LIVE THE KING!" post and its echoing) is a joke, a transparent trick they use repeatedly. As w/ Musk’s Nazi salute, they'll pretend for out-group audiences to be kidding or misunderstood, while the in-group recognizes that they are deadly serious.

Listen when we say that Trump views himself as a literal God-king we are not being metaphorical www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Men who were once imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay write about the detention of migrants there now: "We are not just survivors of Guantánamo. We are witnesses. And we will not let the world forget." www.forever-wars.com/former-guant...

HOT RESEARCH NEWS! Motonormativity ("car brain") is a bias that stops people making rational judgements about driving en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motonor... Our new study shows where this bias comes from AND how it makes people think they're odd for supporting changes to the transport system 🧵

I'm with Kelly here: deeply interested in leftism as a political project but have no interest whatsoever in leftism as a subculture. the stakes of leaving this behind are hopefully clearer by the day

Breaking: The Federalist Society quickly reboots as the Royalist Society.

I wish there was a way to quantify the collective amount of work lost due to stress and despair over the last few weeks, independent of barriers to funding.

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

Me when I see more people want to eliminate DOGE than the IRS

In a very genuine way we need to salute dudes like this who are just big guys in baseball caps who say things like “I’m a Christian so I think we should care about everybody”

Tuft University's post-election analysis of Gen Z voters:

Back on my hobby horse: Don’t use the phrase “taxpayer dollars” to make claims upon collective resources. Not only does it reproduce facile ideas about gov finance, it also reifies the reactionary notion that the taxpayer is the proper subject of the state. The word you’re looking for is “public”.

"America has no king" seems like a good theme to rally around

this Adrienne Rich poem from the @yalereview.bsky.social archives sucker punched me this am

Do you know the difference between "distraction" and "amplification"? He's not trying to distract us from anything. He's making it clear that he sees himself as a king, plans to act like a king, and expects those in power to enable him and allow him to act as a king.

🧵Who is opposing the Trump administration? I analysed 76 actions of the administration since inauguration and then searched for *meaningful* opposition to each. I grouped the types of opposition and considered what we can learn from both them & actions where opposition has been lacking 1/24

Horrifying Canadian higher ed news: York University, one of the country’s major R1s, is apparently suspending admission to a number of key programs (including GWS, languages, classics, and enviro biology)—very likely auguring cuts. This appears to be straight out of the West Virginia playbook.

Look I expect cruelty from this administration—but who exactly is the intended audience for this? People who skinned cats as children?

The intended audience is us. To make us not think of people as people— to push us into seeing every person of color as an object, as undeserving of opportunity and rights, as the problem, as deportable.

The fact that the media doesn’t yet understand that each attack on an individual outlet is an attack on all astounds me. Folks, he is coming for all of us. Draw the line now.

Once again, maybe the presidents of major R1 research universities think existential threats to their business models & institutions might be worth loudly & collectively speaking out against in front of microphones 🤷‍♂️ bsky.app/profile/mcop...

Keep up the great work yall

This is so powerful and prescient

The university that declares “We are not throwing trans kids under the bus, we are not ending diversity and inclusiveness efforts, and we are not opening our doors to ICE agents” would not only be uniquely heroic but would be doing some strong branding work on the cheap.
