So, will I be teaching many times more students (where will they come from?) or will they be completing their studies in weeks rather than years?

Bump for the visiting-a-museum-at-the-weekend crowd...

Talking to students next week about 'museum interpretation'. I have lots of thoughts and questions to share with them, but fewer visual examples. So, if you see this, please reply with pictures you've taken of good, bad, and 'other' labels, panels, guides, &c. Don't forget the alt-text! #glam

Thank you to the 250+ members who signed this petition. Sadly, UCU Left members on HEC voted this motion down: ucucommons.org/2025/02/13/m... If you haven't voted yet, please vote for @ucucommons.bsky.social backed candidates for UCU NEC. To put jobs first, we need to overturn the UCU Left majority

Don't know who needs to hear this*, but your occasional reminder that if you choose to set students to writing a blog post, as a fun alternative to writing a standard academic essay, you will need to invest time in introducing them to what a blog is... (* it me, I needed to hear it, c. 2022)

Some rare good news...

Important for #UKHE UCU members πŸ‘‡

We could make a collective choice to stop donating our labour to profiteering organisations.

If you're attending the Swansea University Open Day on the 15th February and would like any materials or any information about Swansea University in an accessible format, get in touch: [email protected] πŸ˜€Our service provides accessible resources to print disabled students. #AlternativeFormats

Re-posting; don't worry about the clunky title, which amounts to no more than 'a PhD in something PhD-worthy'; do make haste to get in touch with me or another potential supervisor to talk about your project idea.

2 fully-funded PhD places available in Swansea's School of Culture and Communication -- which includes history, heritage, ancient history, classical studies. Topic open; restricted to those who would pay UK fees; tight deadline 24 February. Feel free to share. www.swansea.ac.uk/postgraduate...

@phdhurtbrain.bsky.social -- I hope that you don't mind that I'm using your tweet from 2023 (which no longer exists) in my lecture on early modern news media this week.

Just seen a CFP for HSS2025. Not my field, but in any case -- I love New Orleans; I very much like the History of Science Society; yet at this present moment, travelling to the US for work or leisure seems like a betrayal of my values and the values of those I care about who live there.

The backstory here is that I shared rooms in college with a historical linguist, much smarter than me, who used to instruct me on the importance of being a non-prescriptivist, using grammatically perfect sentences. I had to figure out a way to keep up my side of the conversation.

Exactly -- it's not ideological to bring reality and the non-ideological social, political, cultural, and scientific consensus (about climate change, the media, gender, 'race', human diversity, medicine, and the normal functioning of a democracy, amongst other things) to the attention of students.

You know one thing you learn growing up as the child of an alcoholic is not to confuse the skill of understanding other people with the ability to change them.

Today I learned that the other half of her voluminous collection was devoted to crime fiction. Which of course is perfect for someone who specialised in medieval logic....

I've voted in the UCU eldction too, and was grateful to have Jo's guidance in front of me when I did so. #UKHE

What? Is this for real?

My two considered responses are: (1) I think the existence of podcasts is a good thing, and I'm sure people making them get a lot out of it, and listeners too (though that seems less important from a distance); (2) I have no interest in listening to anyone's podcast ever.

Your occasional reminder that #UKHE leaders didn't come up with the terrible idea of becoming reliant on income from international students all by themselves. It was government policy to grow international student numbers.

Important thread for those who care about the humanities, culture, UKHE, Wales...

Turns out there is more than one sector in the UK where change at pace is required but those demanding change can't or won't say what it should look like.

Horribly grim news coming out of both Cardiff and Durham today... Solidarity with all those affected.

Fellow #skystorians I have been reading Caspar Hirschi's The Origins of Nationalism: An Alternative History (specifically the bits on humanist nationalism; not got to Luther yet) and I would like to know what the word on the street is. What do y'all make of it? #History #Reformazing #EarlyModern
