See papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.... We find that backsliding occurs (1) When the incumbent's followers tolerate violations of democracy, so that the incumbent backslides with popular support, or (2) When the incumbent exceeds the limits of tolerance, so it can stay in power only if it backslides.

What happens to revolutionary parties after revolutions? My excursion into political history. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

I cannot find categories to understand what is going on. Everything feels like an aftermath of a revolution and worse is still to come. But it resulted from an election. Elections are not supposed to generate radical transformations. Perhaps Krugman is right: too early to tell.

Michael was a scholar of exceptional courage, originality, and intellect. There goes 52 years of friendship. Painful.

"Bias" eliminates 100% of statistical research.

US-style constitutional review is not associated with better observance of different kinds of rights nor with faster economic growth, but it is associated with higher income inequality. See papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

A revised version of my, rather bleak, essay in The Future of Social Democracy is at papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Somebody at @ajpseditor.bsky.social has a great sense of humor, having accepted our paper on the “dictator’s dilemma” the very day that Bashar al-Assad fled Syria. Joint with @luozhaotian.bsky.social, @antonshirikov.bsky.social, and Dmitriy Vorobyev. https://osf.io/b94fc

A little nugget from Esping-Andersen on partisan politics, workers' power, and the welfare state in capitalist economies. This was written 35 years ago.

Near 600 and growing number of political scientists calling for the immediate impeachment of South Korean president

Exceptionally lucid and solid.

Sad to hear the brilliant and great Walter Korpi passed. Korpi was on a very short list of my all time favorite political economic theorists. Almost all my work is fundamentally based on power resources theory. His work on the welfare state is pivotal and central to so many fields.

Why democracy, backsliding, or autocracy? Unabashedly, I think this model has exceptionally rich results. The introductory overview is intended to be self-explanatory without delving into the math. See papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf

Just to signal my presence. I will not longer post at X.
