Mark Graham and the Internet Archive / Wayback Machine are awesome.

Beautiful piece. I've lost many in my immediate family with a terminal diagnosis. The same humor Dr. Lin uses to confront his fate has always been a comfort to me. It's empowering, asserts our humanity, and helps us appreciate whatever moments we might have. If you face this, please read.

Trump trolling everyone with AI generated social posts is working. He's taxing our collective cognitive load, distracting society from existential issues like tech companies now able to read your brain "no surgery required." If you can't compartmentalize, don't take bait. www.vox.com/future-perfe...

This line from the Vatican is a sage way of thinking about AI and ethics. While some language carries religious connotation ("human vocation"), it has completely secular application. From a super interesting edition of @projectliberty.io's weekly newsletter: email.projectliberty.io/how-the-vati...

Fun piece. One of those read that feels nostalgically normal these days in journalism.

I like the idea that people can reclaim words and celebrate nuanced identities. Good stuff.

The Reports Committee for Freedom of the Press (@rcfp.org) – which fights to protect journalists' legal rights, and which I was proud to work with at @freedom.press – just published a great guide to reporting on information illegally obtained by a third party. www.rcfp.org/resources/re...

I vividly remember watching this 4 min video in 2020 and thinking how glad I was that the US military has leaders like this. So much respect for how he handled the enormous pressures of his service, society, and humanity. Anyway, looks like Trump fired him for it: www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/u...

Is anyone keeping a database of people granted executive clemency/pardoned by Trump and their subsequents incidents? Like, re-arrested, killed in shootout with police, etc? Curious how these rates compare to general public.

Every federal employee who handles FOIA requests be like: • [REDACTED] • [REDACTED] • [REDACTED] • [REDACTED] • [REDACTED]

If i were president i would issue an executive order stating that everyone had to love each other and listen to CDs and then I'd push through universal healthcare

If we had an equivalent of the NY Post here in Los Angeles the headline would write itself. “Mayor Bass to LAFD chief: You’re a Ghana”

👀

The way this headline frames the issue is excellent. Good piece with a strong ending, too.

If they give the gig to a Straight Men’s Chorus, odds are they’re hiring a less qualified applicant based on sexual orientation.

If anyone wants to question whether journalists are calling things by the right name, this is the level of nerdy diligence most of the profession delights in:

One heckuva' line by @kevinroose.com www.nytimes.com/2025/02/10/t...

Trump keeps calling his rival political party the "Democrat Party" which isn't its actual name. He previously labeled his current Secretary of State as "Little Marco." And if Megyn Kelly supports this does she also support being called "Crazy Megyn"? 🤷‍♂️

This is just a naked attempt to exempt Musk from FOIA (public records) requests, right? Like, it has no other implication, no real world impact on what he’s doing, and doesn’t change that Trump would pardon him for anything criminal, right?

We're hiring a Director of Campaigns & Partnerships! If you have experience advocating in state legislatures and a strong political background, join us in leading bipartisan efforts to advance First Amendment–friendly policies that support local news. www.rebuildlocalnews.org/careers/dire...

Great gig for someone with a passion for press rights!

“The people must know before they can act, and there is no educator to compare with the press." - Ida B. Wells

"Rather than squabbling over who gets prime pressroom real estate right now, it’s more important to send a message that an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us." Solidarity with an informed public, above all. ✊ (As a former HuffPost staffer, the "political fig leaf" line made me chuckle.)

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The entire American experiment in democracy is to secure those three things. For everyone. Equally. Not sure who needs to be reminded of this, but they removed "estate" (i.e., property) to replace it with happiness. That was very intentional.

Delightful/quaint video on sending news photos in 1930s. Also, reminder of corporate legacy of control of news! Opening card says Spot News presented by Chevrolet/GM. I think "future" of news may cyclically return to 1700s-style pamphlet era (uncontrolled), but maybe this? Study history, folks.

Since I don't want to fall into the trap of presenting media criticism without solutions, let me offer one key idea. Your voice and attention are resources. As much as you use them to address media you don't like, perhaps consider making a concerted effort to amplify and support media you do like

So ... what if the judge says no?

I'm hearing from several journalists finding themselves w/ infosec (cyber security) concerns and not yet understanding playing field they're suddenly on. Lots to learn (follow EFF!), but free/cheap tools to consider: Signal (not WhatsApp/Telegram) SecureDrop Bitwarden Yubikey Mullvad TOR DeleteMe

IT'S FRIDAY NIGHT AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS. IT'S TIME FOR hiring. At @freedom.press we're hiring a senior digital security trainer. Share with your journalism security friends: freedom.press/careers/job/...

So so so smart of NAHJ (National Association of Hispanic Journalists) to spotlight this session at their upcoming 2025 conference. There are so many aspects to AI and this is one that's easily overlooked. Love that @freedom.press is on it! nahjconference.org

For a brief, blissful moment this story reminded of a time on the internet when you could read endless non-existential news stories. Feels painfully normal at this junction in history.

For a guy who convinced his voters he’d keep them safe from foreign conflicts, this sure sounds like all-in on an asymmetrical war that will kill a lot of Americans, — potentially on domestic soil because that’s what asymmetrical war does.

There is still good in the world, and Matt’s on it!

Scoop: CBS News chief Wendy McMahon and "60 Minutes" boss Bill Owens have, in private conversations, made it clear that they oppose any settlement with Donald Trump. Details in @status.news: www.status.news/p/paramount-...

LA Times owner says journalism and his paper’s editorial pages have been too partisan. Last week, Dr. Soon-Shiong tweeted 18 times in a row to boost RFK Jr., even as a writer says the paper altered his op-ed to drop all criticism of the HHS nominee. My NPR story: www.npr.org/2025/02/03/n...

A custom BlueSky feed dedicated to coverage of local protests would be a good use of this site.

Given the effective collapse of the bird site, I’m finding it harder to keep tabs on problematic police-press interactions during protests in California. If anyone is aware of a problem, message me here, there, or at pressrights [at] lapressclub [dot] org

Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories with a combined population 12% the size of the U.S. Would love to see the math on what that would do to political slant of both House and Senate — and electoral college.

Makes sense. Same price for a beer at Erewhon as an NBA game.

Lakers now led by a guy in his 40s and a guy with nagging injuries who could stand to lose a few pounds. I find them more relatable than ever.
