There are a number of safety seminars/webinars coming up. NPPA has one Saturday at 10am PT. CPJ has one on Monday. If you can’t find NPPA info online ping me and I’ll track it down.

Very disappointing! I didn't have a recollection of that, so looked it up. He was in his 90s when he said it, almost a decade after I'd (briefly!) been around him. Uncharacteristic of what I remember. However, based on this, I don't think his Kaepernick reasoning would extend to Nezza's performance.

I've been keeping the evidence organized by department:

I met him and worked around him briefly. I believe he was a saint who loved everyone, supported everyone, embraced others, and rooted for underdogs. As a kid he rooted for the Giants because they lost a game so badly. I couldn't care less about his political registration. He woulda' loved this!

I’ll be doing an updated count in the next day or so, but at this point injuries probably somewhere in the low dozens, maybe 30+. Even if you exclude press getting tear gassed, which could be dozens more.
(It’s hard to “measure” injuries. All important but not all equal.)

Matt Gutman is Chief National Correspondent for ABC News. I've talked to him a couple times, chill guy. But this is a level of cool I've never seen on television. LAPD officer is completely unhinged. Matt rises above it. BRAVO.
I'm sorry you're treated worse in LA than the war zones you've covered.

THIS is the job of the press.
Police told press there was a dispersal order.
So a reporter for @calmatters.org asked people in crowd if they heard it. Nope!
Without press to document, LAPD will spread false narrative that they were warned.
I've told LAPD leaders for YEARS nobody can hear them.

Wild television! I don't think LASD is capable of timing anything that well, though. 😉

Governor has no involvement. LAPD is a command structure reporting up to a chief, who reports to 5-member police commission. Commission appointed by mayor and confirmed (rubber stamped) but 15-member city council. Mayor and council are elected. Ultimately, chief runs day-to-day. Mayor responsible.

I think they also need discipline and qualified immunity reform. But let's evaluate training after they're required to have more than my friggin' barber.

Good question. Regardless, CA Penal Code 13652(b)(6) requires officers to "minimize possible incidental impact" of these weapons on journalists.

I suggest LAPD follow California Penal Code 409.7, which I helped write.

2020-2021 I documented 50+ incidents of police misconduct against press in 12 months all over California.
This last week I documented 50+ in just LA.
2020 set the stage, but 2025 a big escalation.
