I tried to show them that their concerned neighbors and fellow bagel enjoyers, the good people they know, are not the brainwashed demons their media warn them about. They conceded that they didn't know many "Demonrats" in real life, just online. But they existed and were ruining the world, I heard!

Without belaboring details or YouTube recommendations, I was left feeling that very few possible events in what remains of a reality-based American community could disabuse these men of their most disturbing beliefs and ideological commitments.

One of these men said Trump was his king. This was said, not to me, but to his compatriot before I engaged, so it rang more ominous than the usual trolling. They both remained friendly to me, backing off immediately from personal attacks. But then, I'm a middle aged white guy born in their town.
