8/4 Wolverhampton SJ90. Rerun with 2x Oak Beauty, 2x Common Plume, 3x Common Quaker and what I’m assuming is 1x Agonopterix arenella (Brindled Buff). Can anyone confirm please? NFG if it is. Thanks. @cambsmoths.bsky.social @mothiduk.bsky.social #teammoth

A work in progress: Bode’s Galaxy (M81) taken from my garden. About 11 hours of data from last week welded together in Pixinsight. It’s getting there but I’m running into a knowledge gap. I need to brighten those faint arms without losing detail. Time to hit YouTube 🤓 #astrophotography

Astonished by my success with clearwings in the garden last year I’ve added a couple more lures. And because I’m ridiculously optimistic, I’ve bought a Welsh Clearwing lure… 😳 I know, but unless you try these things…😁

First spawn appeared last night in our pond.

For my dad-in-law’s birthday on this gorgeous spring day we went for a genteel stroll round Shugborough followed by lunch at the Wolesley Arms. Lovely!

11/4 Wolverhampton SJ90. Numbers slowly rising: 4x Oak Beauty, 5x Common Quaker, 1x Common Plume and 1x Clouded Drab which is nfy. #teammoth

Pre-bed check, two Oak Beautys in my 40W actinic and a random Common Plume on the studio window… again 🙄 Can’t get rid of the little bugger. 😂🤣😂🤣

I’m going with Angle Shades for this caterpillar which was crawling up the curtains in our living room 🙄 Am I correct? #teammoth

4/1 last night. Wolverhampton SJ90. All Common Quakers. I only had one trap out, my 20W Sylvania, because I was astrophotographying too. That’s multitasking right? 😏 #teammoth

So much for the clear night 🙄 Just put the astro rig away as it’s hazed over enough to make carrying on pointless. Tomorrow’s still looking promising atm 🤞

With an unexpected run of clear nights I’ve lugged this lot out again. If we had more clear nights annually I’d invest in a wee dome as this isn’t good on my back 😬 I’m taking more shots of M81, Bode’s Galaxy. I might even try a narrowband filter to highlight its star forming regions.

2/2 last night. Wolverhampton SJ90. A solitary Oak Beauty joined the Beautiful Plume. #teammoth

Plume moth to my 20W Sylvania, my first moth for March. Wolverhampton SJ90. It didn’t hang around though. I’ll check both traps a little later. #teammoth

First pheromone trap out. FUN. Bit early but you never know 😉 #teammoth

An all too rare clear night so the ‘big’ scope’s out in the garden. I’m photographing M81, Bode’s Galaxy. Tonight I’ll take 60 three minute exposures without a filter and a second set tomorrow using a broadband filter which will cut out a lot of artificial light glow. Terrible light pollution here 😔

After three years our Witch hazel is finally settling in.

Feeling very chuffed today. I managed to bag an unused CD (1991) of ‘The King of Elfland’s Daughter’ by Bob Johnson and Pete Knight. The new one is on the right, on the left is my crude home made copy. It was released in 1977 and I fell in love with it after listening at a friend’s house.

OK, I’ll try again. Here’s a link to my bumblebee nest box video. I forgot I’d uploaded it to my YouTube channel. Hope it’s useful 😉 #bumblebees

It’s that time of year when I wheel out my video on how to make a bumblebee nest box. My video’s three minutes long but apparently BlueSky can’t accept over a minute 🙄 So much for that idea then. #bumblebees

I’ve just set up three bumblebee nest boxes in the garden. Out of three it’s not unusual for one to be occupied, occasionally two and rarely all three. I’ll post my ‘how to’ video in the next post 😉 #bumblebees

A little light dredging for the pond as it’s been filling up over the 8 or 9 years of its life. I’m retaining the silt and once settled I’ll sort through it for inverts and newts to return to the pond. PS. the colander zip-tied to my landing net handle from the early 70s works a treat 😁

4/3 Wolverhampton SJ90. A rerun of the previous night with Oak Beauty and Common Quaker but the OB looks like a different individual. I usually avoid trapping on consecutive nights but was hoping that flighty micro from before might have turned up. It didn’t. #teammoth

Wolverhampton SJ90. Nothing in the traps yet but spotted this Dotted Border on a window of the studio 😁

2/2 Wolverhampton SJ90. Thought I might have bagged a few more but it is what is. One frustrating micro, new to me, was roosting in the crux of the vanes. I made the wrong choice. I decided to separate the vanes to get a decent photo rather than get a ‘safety’ shot first. Predictably it flew off…😔
