Nathan: I could write a funny drama but I do think writing good comedy is harder. I would like to try my hand at a funny drama someday.

Nathan: I was really nervous going into it - it's such a departure for me. I've never written for a streamer before and I'm enjoying it! Would I ever write a full-on drama? I don't know that I could.

Q: You have a great comedic, heartwarming writing style which really shines in Newark, Newark. Would you consider writing drama?
Nathan: I'm writing on an Apple / A24 show at the moment. It has a comedic underlay to the whole thing but it's more of a drama.

Q: We all find Lucius and Pete's relationship so sweet. Did you ever talk with Matt or David about what you saw for them in the future?
NF: I always thought that they'd tried to get out of the game. I think it would be a little bit like the plot of The Incredibles. I think it would have that shape.

Q: When you push Blackbeard off the ship, and then you go "YEAH BITCH" was that a direct reference to Breaking Bad?
NF: I'm gay so I've never seen Breaking Bad.

Q: In S2, one of my fave things is when Izzy calls Lucius twatty. Was that meant affectionately?
NF: Yes, they think of each other as gnats but they're stuck together so they either keep waging war or start getting on. I'm going to stop there because if I keep talking about these two together...

Nathan: I wanted it to have that veneer of comedy. It was about making sure I really knew what happened to Lucius but also he has a tendency to over exaggerate. There's a part of him that was loving the drama.

Nathan: The way we approached it in the show is fun because it's so camp and heightened. Traumatized Lucius is like he's trying to act traumatized. He was leaning into being a troubled problem child. I still approached it as a comedy - I wanted it to be funny.

Nathan: Lucius isn't just one thing. I would have happily kept being the "sassy scribe" but then I was forced not to which was a cool challenge. Me and David chatted about the difference in the seasons and I made sure I was really clear for myself about what happened to Lucius between the seasons.

Q: S1 Lucius - really fun, makes jokes about everything. S2 Lucius - really traumatized, makes jokes about everything. How did your approach the change?
NF: I was really grateful for that change.

Q: Your acting roles fall into ensemble / guest roles. Do you see a leading man role in yourself?
Nathan: Yes, I've written myself as the lead in things but I've written myself as a bizarre leading man. I could see myself as a leading man that I would write.

Nathan: I'd love to do a play at the National. My absolute dream is there's a playwright called Tom Wells - he's my favorite playwright.

Nathan: My favorite musical is the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. I'm begging my theater director friends to put a production on and cast me. I've always said in 10 years time, I want to play Trunchbull in Matilda.

Q: When is your next stage appearance and what would your ideal role be?
Nathan: I loved it. It's one of the most gratifying experiences I've ever had in my career. I don't have any stage work coming up but I'd love to do a musical - like a good comedy musical.

Nathan: I've always wanted to write a one-man show called "Nathan Foad: Most Likely To Be Famous."

Q: Would you consider writing your own autobiography and what would you name it?
Nathan: The thing that made Kristian's book so good is that Kristian has lived such a life. I can't stress this enough - I am so boring. I'd be interested in writing essays or comedy short stories.

Q: What was your favorite episode to film?
Nathan: In S1, I really liked the episode that establishes mine and Matt relationship. In S2, I liked filming on the beach in AONZ. I loved filming my comeback episode. I knew people were anticipating it and I really loved reuniting with Matt.

Nathan: What I like about Taika is that he's pure chaos. When you get to do a 1:1 scene with him, he'll really lock in and do the scene with you.

Nathan: I was really sick the first month of filming S2 so you can hear when I'm screaming at the end - I have barely any voice. I always get terrified working with stunt workers because I'm such a baby.

Q: How did the scene of Lucius tossing Blackboard overboard get filmed and what was that like?
Nathan: There was a stunt double and he was the sexiest fucking man. That's my favorite scene that I did in the second season. I loved doing S2 Lucius and I loved in that scene that I got to lose my mind.

Nathan: Kristian should live in gentle fear of me. That's a healthy dynamic. I love him, I miss him, I wish he was here to I could crawl all over him.

Nathan: I make fun of Con for being old. I love him but the man is an easy target. Have you seen him use his phone? Yesterday he was trying to show us a video on his phone - torch on, falling out of its case. But she looks amazing for being in her 80s. Shame she's not got long left.

Q: favorite breakfast item?
Nathan: Hashbrowns. I'm trying to eat better so maybe something proteiny because that's something we're supposed to care about. It's so annoying. I eat eggs every single morning and then someone recently was like what about your cholesterol? I'M TRYING TO BE GOOD.

Nathan: I love doing conventions with Kristian because he's an old pro. The best part is that me and him are two bitchy old ladies sat in the corner drinking gin. It's always fun to perv on the boys with him. It's nice to have someone to appreciate the view with.

Q: Do you have a favorite con memory with Kristian?
A: I don't know who that is... My angel baby boy. Love him so much. It can't be overstated how much he meant to me, especially on the first season of the show.

Con: Izzy doesn't believe he's in love with Blackbeard. He doesn't have that emotional maturity. He knows he's connected to Blackbeard but he doesn't think of it in the same way of what's going on between Stede and Ed. He doesn't have the capability to yearn. #ofmd

DJ: I think Izzy is an amazing first mate who should NEVER be captain. #ofmd
comment in response to
post
Con: He wants the old Ed back but you can't get Stede out of the picture so he gets the Ed without Stede and that's never what he wanted. Izzy's first love is the sea and the crew. His love of a man, this man, is secondary to that. He can never articulate that but that's what it is. #ofmd
comment in response to

Q: At the end of S1, Izzy threatens Ed to "watch his fucking step". Is Kraken Ed a "careful what you wish for" with Izzy or did Izzy just not think this through.
DJ: This is Izzy's version of wanting to be a "real boy". He wishes for it and then gets the thing he wishes for. #ofmd

DJ: The wonderful thing about Alec Guinness and the way that he's used in the first Star Wars, he dies and then becomes stronger than anyone ever imagined. To do that with Izzy's character and still have Izzy would be the challenge of S3. I have an idea of how it would work. #ofmd

Q: We know Con would love to play a vampire. When S3 is made, would you consider making Izzy rise from the grave as a vampire?
Con: Feel free to just say fuck off.
DJ: First of all, no vampires, that's WWDITS. I think the idea for Izzy without revealing too much is that he's now more of a force.

Con: You cannot underestimate the important of romance in these shows. It's so relevant. That's why your heart breaks. But when we break it, that's good writing. Showing men, women, they/thems being romantic with each other - that's brave. That's politics. That's what I loved about #OFMD.

DJ: The thing in performance that I love about the "you wear fine things well" scene is that Stede is driving. He's bold!
Con: I don't think Blackbeard has had romance before. Certainly not with "steak and a fuck" Izzy.
comment in response to

Con: The perfect irony of "you wear fine things well" scene being filmed with Izzy in the wings watching it. That's the show. You don't need the scene of Izzy getting Blackbeard ready because you have it in other places.
comment in response to

DJ: There was a scene in S1 of Izzy getting Blackbeard ready for Stede ahead of the fancy party and just how fucked up it would have been.
Con: It would have been great but again, the romance is so important and those men are allowed to be romantic.
comment in response to

Con: Izzy's arc could be what it was because of how little we knew about who he was. Most of the time, the most interesting characters, you're interested in them because you don't know much about them. I'm delighted you all wanted more but trust me, he [David] got it right.
comment in response to

Q: You touched on the scene with Jackie and Izzy earlier. Were there longer shots of that?
DJ: No, unfortunately! It was one of those painful things to write because it could have gone on for ever but you have to wrap it up. It's the bad guy plot that's just to move it story.

DJ: When you're writing, you're the lawyer for the character. I don't know that the writing was there for Ricky. The season was so condensed. Badminton had a good beef, this guy killed his brother!

DJ: James Tom recommended Vico for their part. Jim was the last part cast in S1.
Con: What Vico brings is that they don't play with any of it. They're just there.

DJ: I don't remember, the sounded nice.
