Short story writing is weird. Just gad an idea for a story just based on the title George in the Cubicle. God knows if I will actually write it, but I kind of want to read it.

Did you know you can listen to the “Sleeve Notes” album for free on Bandcamp? Sarah-Clare Conlon x Jez Dolan “Breathe Silence” is track no.5. Here we are recording it, or ‘laying it down’ as the pros say. See us performing it live at the Burgess on 12 April. sleeve-notes.bandcamp.com/album/sleeve...

I guess nobody much reads Durrell these days? Just started the Alexandra quartet. The writing is another level.

Day off, and had an idea for a story, so just managed to throw down 1500 words of it. A little break now. Not quite sure I've got the tone right but will see.

Have discovered the New Pornographers / Neko Case. Great when you find a new old artist with a large back catalogue.

Some nice finds today

First day in a fortnight I'm in Manchester and free. Strategic Monday off to recover from travels etc!

Think I've never been this south (nr Exeter) at least on the West of the country.

It's 40 years this year since Eurythmics only UK #1 (and best single) There Must be an Angel. Both @fatroland.bsky.social and @nicholasroyle.bsky.social remember its iconic nature and emotional resonance on Sleeve Notes, ten writers responding to record store day. sleeve-notes.bandcamp.com

The Burgess Foundation is looking for bar staff. Are you friendly and self-motivated? Are you barista / coffee machine trained? Fancy a few shifts a month, starting in March? Send us an email with your CV: [email protected]

We're now up to 103 writers, lit mags and publishers in my Hybrid Writing start pack who leap over genre boundaries & out of boxes, ignoring traditional labels & definitions. Would you like to be added or do you know someone else who fits into this unboxed box?! #HybridWriting go.bsky.app/MswLLwc

Thanks for @taniahershman.bsky.social for including me on.her hybrid writers list. Quite a few of us are performing on our Record Store day project. Listen here, and a link to 12th April event on the bandcamp. sleeve-notes.bandcamp.com/album/sleeve...

How will Kendrick perform without all the swears?

American sports are nuts. Apparently kansas city cam win a three-peat which has never been done. Had to look it up, Apparently it's short for three repeat. Which doesn't even make sense (the first not being a repeat) and why just lose the re-. Nuts, like I said.

We're not going to get those posthumous Salinger books are we?

Big Golgafrinchan Ark Fleet Ship B vibes from the new US government. Sack all the telephone sanitation engineers and then see what happens. #douglasadams

New substack out at 5pm today. Eraserhead, William Gerhardie, Martin Amis, Postscript books, Double Indemnity... sign up here.https://adrianslatcher.substack.com/

5th book read in January. This was great fun, echoes of Chekhov, premonitions of Nabokov, and Heller. An Anglo-Russian novelist's darkly comic 1922 debut. Gerhardie was the model for Boyd's writer in Any Human Heart.

RIP Marianne. I like her version of this... youtu.be/Lwd5UVJUacM?...

Oh man, all the Band are gone, now that's a sad day in rock history. Garth the last to go. youtu.be/FFqb1I-hiHE?...

Sorely lacking political drinking mates this week. How to parse what's going on in America? My dystopia studies 101 doesn't come close.

I have to say I think Martin Amis's the Zone of Interest is a late career masterpiece. I wish I'd read it at the time. Like Wolf Hall it does something remarkable with its copious research, finding a language to immerse you in the horror of the concentration camps and Arendt's "banality of evil."

I was probably 15 or so when I saw Eraserhead. Part of that late night TV movie smorgasbord that traumatised/inspired Gen X. Watching it tonight, what a beautiful film it is.

Thought I'd lost my notebook with The best story I've ever written in it (TM) but I'd just left it on the table. Phew. I do put my address in which worked once. The other one I lost had The 2nd best story I've ever written in it (also TM.)

Me & Billy Fuller from @beakbristol.bsky.social were commissioned to write & compose together for Sleeve Notes (curated @adrianslatcher.bsky.social & @ggaffa.bsky.social) for Record Store Day 2025! We're performing at @anthonyburgess.bsky.social, Manchester, on Record Store Day Saturday 12th April.

I'm guessing if USA can ban tik tok as a threat to national security, EU are fine to ban X on the same grounds?

I think my biggest Gen X complaint is younger Boomers and older Millennials pretending they are Gen X. Look, if you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

I have had a terrible cold/cough and have had to change all my plans for next two weeks. I'm pretty sure it's a reaction to the news as much as the weather. Anyway, Caffè Nero is playing Ethiopiques so not all bad.

I don't take much notice of the Eliot's and Forwards so hadn't wondered about Peter Gizzi. Thought he was a new name to me then I realise he edited this book I've had for 25 years or more! Worth a bit now as well :)

Couldn't sleep last night so wrote a whole story. Hope I can read my own writing!
