Storm #Éowyn tomorrow in Ireland looks really ugly. There are reasons, why public transport, a lot of schools and probably most of public life will shut down. And before somebody looks on old maps, also Northern Ireland is now under red warning. www.met.ie/warnings-tom...

Has the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) weakened over the last decades? In our new study, we combine state-of-the-art CMIP6 models and observation-based estimates of the air-sea heat flux in the North Atlantic to show that the AMOC has not declined since the 1960s! 🌊

From the experience in the last years currently only about a third of abstracts at #egu25 are submitted up to now. So submitting the remaining 10.000 might become a hell of a ride in the last couple of days.

Abstract submission for #egu25 opened: CL 4.6: "Climate Predictions from Seasonal to Multi-Decadal Timescales and Their Applications" Submission Deadline: January 15, 2025 Financial Support Deadline: December 2, 2024 We look forward to see you in Vienna & online!

End of year look at paper projects (* = first author): published 2024: DD* in review: PL in write up: BG, KA, EA, NW, KP in work: HY*, ND + some on the horizon #researchlife

🧠 Three in four teens face mental health struggles 🌏 A @thelancet.bsky.social study finds ~75% of Australian adolescents experience significant depression or anxiety, with many enduring chronic symptoms. When will we address this? 🔗 www.thelancet.com/journals/lan... #MentalHealth #SciComm 🧪

With the dark season in Copenhagen, just jumping into a couple of trains leads to some form of time travel. The length of daylight wraps back (or forward?) for about a month for me. Still grey though.

Sometimes you get reviews back, know that they are valid, but you feel still disappointed about its conclusions. But in the end, you have to give even crazy ideas a try. Better outcomes will come, hopefully the next time (but likely not with this idea).

A new paper led by Sebastian Sippel just appeared in Nature arguing that ocean temperature measurements in the early 20th century have a cold bias. It's a fun story illustrating the process of scientific discovery, so let me talk about it a bit. 🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Uh, a round number. But honestly, as it is gs, many of them do anyway not count (but anyway thanks) and there are reasons why we repeat again and again that citations are not as important as some try to make them. Anyway, we all love a round number, don't we. 🎉

After all these years it is great to be back. Hello Liverpool!

New paper out on decadal predictions of full seasonal temperature distributions. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... 1/7 #newpaper

Hello Vienna! Hello #egu24 It looks like the week starts in chaos for me (still in Hotel limbo) but look forward to an awesome conference (and the weather is so nice cooling down tomorrow so that we enjoy to sit inside for the whole day)

Friday opinions: Why do we so often undersell the complexity of climate science. Often it is easier to break down our everyday problems in terms of quantum mechanics, as this is much better known (not understood) by many.

Travelling back from my xmas holiday. Train between Hamburg and Copenhagen cancelled so spending hours in a city bus for an international rail replacement bus. Will be exciting if and when I get home this night.

Welcome to the new office (and yes, had just two weeks in the old one).

New country, new work. I join today #dmi and work here with the #nckf on stats and attribution. Hello Copenhagen!

Last work day. After more than four years it is time to leave. Goodbye Maynooth! Goodbye Ireland! #newadventure #goodbye #Maynooth
