DOGE cuts ⤷ tornado forecast offices closed overnight ⤷ 27 Americans dead after overnight tornadoes

"AI" uses em-dashes because the writers whose (appropriated) work it's trained on use them. I use them a lot, personally, and of course just about everything I've ever written was chucked into the training bin without my consent or assent. So, you know, whenever you see an "AI" em-dash, think of me.

A swing voter is not a centrist. It's like, a guy who loves guns but has a gay sister, loves weed but hates food stamps because his cousin who owes him 50 bucks gets them. (Also, Osama was Iraqi.) You don't win that guy with a carefully crafted platform, you do it by not seeming fucking lame

My take on "Abundance" is that every time I hear the authors speaking about the book, it sounds like a dispatch from an alternative universe where Obama's fourth electoral victory was his narrowest yet, so the big national concern is how to make technocracy successful and more politically appealing.

The sooner you swear off arguing online the better, I am genuinely kind of angry with myself over how much time and energy and healthy blood pressure I could have saved by doing that a decade earlier

applying for jobs again

Impossible to communicate to people that once you decide that a group more vulnerable than you can be sacrificed in the name of your own safety or interests that you have already entered into an tacit agreement that you can also be sacrificed in the interests of a group less vulnerable than you.

The Senate’s alleged purpose is to defend against tyranny. But, as we’ve seen over the past three months, the institution is incapable of doing so. In which case: why should it even exist?

"primary everyone" feels like the moderate option tbh

We did over a year of coverage on the dangers of photorealistic AI image editing and the most powerful man in the world thinks labels poorly applied in Microsoft Word are the real deal

IT’S REALLY BAD THAT THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WILL SEE FAKE PHOTOSHOPPED POSTS ON TWITTER POSTED BY NAZIS AND BELIEVE THEM

Pritzker calls for mass protests and disruption - “Republicans cannot know a moment of peace,” he says, swaying their portraits will one day be put in museums “reserved for tyrants and traitors”

If you take anything away from my post, I hope it's this:

Turns out you can shape the agenda with dramatic action and maybe even shift public opinion. Crazy.

The story keeps getting more indefensible as they peel back the onion

let’s look back at what has happened so far Cory Booker giving a 25 hour speech: everyone loved it, raised his profile Van Hollen flies to El Salvador and meets Abrego Garcia: everyone loved it, raised his profile Schumer publicly caved: everyone hated that just a general note to Dems

I can't emphasize enough that the most important thing journalists can do right now is publish exactly this kind of article

there’s no reason not to do this. it’d probably end up with another kind of constitutional crisis, which is exactly why it should happen.

the most insane part of the world we live in right now is when gay marriage was legalized in 2015, it felt like that was the killshot into the heritage foundations entire functionality, but now they are running the national policy agenda in a way i’ve never seen in 2025

75%

i am like 80% serious when i say that woke is the only thing that kept this country together

goldman sachs execs showing up to luigi mangione's cell like nick fury recruiting an avenger

we need project woke 2029 to save america

you have to be genuinely stupid as fuck to think american companies are going to respond to tariffs by building factories and moving manufacturing to the US. i don't know how else to say it. you have to be genuinely braindead

it's cold comfort but be aware that if you knew trump was going to implement tariffs like this and implode the economy you are now officially smarter than literally everyone who works for the times, the post, bloomberg, the wsj, basically any of the legacy press who pretended he didn't mean it.

I'm 18. The economy enters a once-in-a-century recession. A Republican president is responsible. I'm 29. There is once-in-a-century pandemic that leads to a once-in-century-recession. A Republican is responsible. I'm 35. Tarriffs trigger a once-in-a-century recession. A Republican is responsible.

Every so often, it just comes back to me in full force. The political and economic order that allowed this man to come to power is obviously no longer tenable. The leaders who let it happen obviously have to be replaced. This is an epoch defining failure and we have to turn the page completely.

New political outlook on American politics just dropped

Good take on why embracing crypto is a dead end www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Things Democratic Senators could do that would be useful: - Withdraw unanimous consent from all Senate business until constitutional rule was restored - Refuse to vote for any legislation until constitutional rule was restored - Boycott as a caucus until constitutional rule was restored

A very old Soviet joke, from an especially dark time: Foxes are fleeing the USSR in droves. Q: Why are you running away? Fox: The Soviets passed a new law that they’re going to arrest all camels. Q: But you’re foxes! Fox: Yeah, why don’t *you* try proving to the NKVD that you’re not a camel.

Law firms and universities will really be like "you did property damage? that pales in effectiveness to my strategy, nonviolent resistence" and then not nonviolently resist

multiple issues here: -it’s unamerican and unconstitutional for the federal govt—and certainly the executive on its own, arbitrarily and in secret—to create a speech code for visa holders -even if that was permissible, suddenly accosting her in the street and abducting her is wildly disproportionate

this is the core of the aggrieved tech billionaire archetype. Sam says it aloud. the way many of them see the techlash is that, one day they were Great Men of History and the next, with zero warning, they were inexplicably villains. everything that comes after stems from an inability to examine this

Unidentified men grabbing someone off the street and putting her in a car because she wrote an op-Ed. This as flatly authoritarian as anything we’ve seen in this country in a very long time.

Democrats Huddle To Decide How Best To Let Massive Republican Fuck-Up Slip Through Fingers

this is fine. the fundamentals of the american economy are strong.

actually the number of people who care about the nonpartisan defense of free speech is exactly the same as it was

Feels like the main thing you should know about the Democratic Party is that three years ago they controlled a trifecta after Trump tried to launch a coup, and they dismissed everyone who said they should impose accountability and said “no, we know how to beat him at the polls: kitchen-table ads”

this is what denying genocide does to you. you irreversibly degrade your political compass, you become incapable of standing for anything clearly.
