In a new letter, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash), ranking member on Senate Commerce Cmte, calls on Commerce Sec. Lutnick to exempt @NOAA & NWS employees involved in protecting public safety from probationary cuts & hiring freeze.

Record-breaking Arctic blast sweeps frigid air south, all the way to the Gulf Coast. Temperatures already 50°F below average in northern Plains. Multiple factors are behind this event, notably Arctic blocking, an extremely negative AO, and stretched polar vortex. www.axios.com/2025/02/18/p...

SCOOP @bloomberg.com: Top officials at the US Department of Homeland Security received a memo from Sec. Kristi Noem on Friday ordering an immediate stop to work connected to climate change and the elimination of climate-related terms across the agency. Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Update as computer models trend colder, snowier with this polar vortex-related Arctic outbreak -- watching the cold, and then a more-likely-than-not East Coast storm www.axios.com/2025/02/14/c...

I wrote this NASA page about wildfires and climate change, and I'm so excited it's finally live. It's a tireless effort to get big pages published at NASA - as it should be! How long will it remain up? Who knows. Check it out while you still can. 🧪 #climatesky science.nasa.gov/wildfires-an...

If you haven't yet read about the Trump executive order yesterday on DOGE and federal workforce cuts, it's a hugely consequential action worth knowing about. @becfalconer.bsky.social has details -- www.axios.com/2025/02/12/t...

Earth may have already breached the long-term 1.5°C Paris target, two new studies show. But what does that mean, really? ""Rather than a numeric target, our goal should be stabilizing the climate as quickly as possible," says @andrewdessler.com More smart climate voices quoted in here ^

NEW: @noaa.gov offices have been asked to search their grants for climate-related keywords, among other executive order-related terms. This could put climate grant-funding in the crosshairs if/once the judicial order holding the funding freeze back is lifted. www.axios.com/2025/02/09/n...

Just spoke (very briefly) to National Archives Director Colleen Shogan, who confirmed to me Trump fired her a few minutes ago: www.404media.co/trump-fires-...

I've been hungry for a clear story that comprehensively lays out the risks to government systems from DOGE. Here, @ibogost.bsky.social and @cwarzel.bsky.social speak to people with the right knowledge and provide a great, sense-making piece. Unfortunately, the sense that is made is... scary sense:

important reporting from @cwarzel.bsky.social and @ibogost.bsky.social on what DODGE's access to federal computing infrastructure may mean www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

If you are a federal employee working on climate, weather forecasting, satellites, ocean obs etc. I am at @afreedmanclimate.03 on Signal and would like to hear from you.

DOE's general counsel and IT offices told DOE Sec. Chris Wright that giving DOGE rep Luke Farritor IT access was a "bad idea" bc he hadn’t had a standard background investigation needed to access the department’s system, per a source. Wright granted him access anyways. www.cnn.com/2025/02/06/c...

So much news today, but if you have a couple min -- this story on climate change impacts on US insurance and real estate value is fascinating and timely post-Calif. fires. (One city on the list of top insurance price increase projections may surprise you.) www.axios.com/2025/02/03/c...

NOAA's future -- Trump nominee for Commerce Secretary disavows Project 2025's plan to break upp oceans, atmosphere agency. Also says he doesn't favor moving some functions to Interior, as rumored re: a possible Exec Order. www.axios.com/2025/01/30/t...

NEW: TikTok says it will go dark on Sunday unless there’s more definitive action from Biden or Trump

Now that's a cold morning forecast by the NWS, for Monday Jan. 20 (MLK Jr. Day & Inauguration Day). Map of wind chills at 7 am via Pivotal Weather shows absolutely frigid conditions in the Plains and Midwest, with the cold seeping into other areas as well.

The cold air outbreak headed for the U.S. is the real deal, though not quite as severe as 2014 for most. www.axios.com/2025/01/15/p... This may be a long duration event for millions, too.

NHC Director Mike Brennan: Helene the most significant mainland U.S. hurricane hit since Katrina in 2005. In addition to catastrophic rainfall flooding, Helene caused more wind fatalities than any tropical system since at least 1963. Almost all due to trees. #AMS2025
