Your work is being erased

Your silence will not save you.

When he said “I have a concept of a plan” about healthcare, he meant: 1. Gut Medicare and Medicaid 2. Halt NIH funding and clinical trials 3. Stop vaccine development 4. Prevent transgender care

Donald Trump is embarrassing the United States on the world stage. We are a country that stands up to dictators and fights for democracy. Minnesota stands firmly with our allies in Ukraine.

My show, @velshimsnbc.bsky.social, exists because @joyannreid.bsky.social made that viable & important. Joy is a builder, a thought leader, a fierce warrior for justice, fairness and equity. Joy is a masterclass in holding power to account. I can’t wait to see what she ends up doing next. #myhero

The wayback machine tells us how CSR used to decide who should be empaneled on a study section. I think you can see why this page was disappeared from view. web.archive.org/web/20250118...

Just going to leave this here should it become useful to anyone…

Update on the Measles outbreak in Texas and New Mexico www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/u... There likely hundreds of cases, so many not being diagnosed. And many more to come. All preventable.

In San Diego County, 1 in 6 people rely on Medicaid. That's why I hosted a Medicaid roundtable in El Cajon yesterday to hear directly from people who these cuts will impact. This isn't a faceless program – cutting Medicaid would do serious harm.

200 million dollars of waste.

This article provides a helpful summary and @katiew.bsky.social is quoted!!

“We’re fucked.” Good write-up in Nature on how the current administration has used the Federal Register as a workaround to block NIH spending without seeming to violate the injunction against the spending freeze. If it’s not rectified by September, billions of $$ for science research will be lost.

1. Help: NIH study sections and council meetings not already published in the Federal Register as of Jan. 21 have not been allowed to meet (thetransmitter.org/funding/fede...). This appears to be an 'end run' around a recent injunction and came from HHS officials. You can help (see below):

Scoop --> Trump-Musk cuts just resulted in the firing of numerous top researchers at NIH's center for combating Alzheimer's, sources tell me. They predict big setbacks to fighting dementias. This cause was once championed by *Republicans.* Details here: newrepublic.com/article/1917...

1/ I am seeing a lot of comments on the slashing of NIH support along the lines of “universities should just spend their huge endowments.” I’m the last person to cheer on the institutional stratification rising endowments have contributed to. But let me explain why this is not a solution.

I'm starting to hear that NSF firings have begun. If you're affected and want to talk, please reach out via signal @jonlambert.12

Letters went out to federal workers this morning stating they were fired due to poor performance. However, all employees had been rated as “exceptional” performers by their supervisors. Please keep these records and pursue wrongful termination claims. Let the lawsuits begin.

“We’re not going anywhere. What’s more: we’re expanding.” Nearly a dozen of Minnesota’s foremost experts on gender-affirming care collaborated on this beautiful op-ed in today’s Strib. No paywall.

Knowledge is power…

NAACP publishes spending guide for Black consumers showing companies that have rolled back their DEI initiatives and others that have maintained their commitment.

The Trump administration has just announced that all college financial aid programs, scholarships, prizes, housing, and graduation ceremonies that help Black or Latino students are now considered to be illegal. The Education Department accuses colleges of discriminating against white students.

NIH funding at @UMich supports important medical research, such as extending the life of organs waiting for transplant, advancing treatments for cerebral palsy, and sustaining experimental genetic trials for children with brain cancer.

REPOST if you support our federal workforce and know how dedicated they are to their jobs. Show them you appreciate them!

We're expediting sex designation change requests on birth certificates. People born in WA who want to change the sex designation on their birth certificate can do so by filing a request with us. . doh.wa.gov/DesignationC...

A shining example....there are 1,000s of these fundamental science discoveries that NIH supports to promote human health

Making sure everyone understands: Afrikaners—Elon Musk’s people—built, enforced, and thrived under the apartheid system they created. Not just “white-ruled segregation”—it was systemic racial oppression to keep the white minority in power. They don’t deserve refugee status—they were the oppressors!

Scientists and journalists need to figure out right quick how to explain to the average person how a massive change in research indirects will impact the medical care they and their children get (eg at the local children’s hospital), the education their children will get, the price of tuition, etc.

From Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities: “NIH slashing the reimbursement of research costs will slow and limit medical breakthroughs that cure cancer and address chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.” www.aplu.org/news-and-med...

Excellent 🧵 on this evening's NIH announcement of a dramatic reduction in indirect rates for research institutions, which amounts to a generational restructuring of the US research and development ecosystem. These cuts are effective immediately, not just for new grants but for existing ones.

Government Retirement and Benefits site will be down 02.08.25 “upgrading capacity for increased workload demand” take that for what you want folks.

The following annual employee trainings have been scrapped at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The impact will be incalculable.

In honor of black inventors. #BlackHistoryMonth

🚨RED ALERT for 🧪: The Trump NIH just gashed indirect costs. This is a direct attack on universities. “Pursuant to this Supplemental Guidance, there will be a standard rate of 15% across all NIH grants for indirect costs.” 😮 Just a devastating Friday night news dump. #scicomm #academicaky

When you solve for the wrong problem, not only do you not get the solution, you can cause harm. The President wasted water that was being saved for farmers for a PR stunt. This was harmful, ludicrous, and solved nothing.

Wondering what INCF is up to in 2025? We have lots of activities planned for this calendar year - here is a list of events we will host or attend in 2025: bit.ly/42uUnRn See you there!

Most of these F31 applicants who had their apps pulled from review will be first time newbies to the NIH system. They are not hardened to the brutality like most of us. So heartbreaking to contemplate their disappointment and confusion and pain over the lost opportunity.

Folks is there a cyber security team at NIH or what, here?

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.
