I'm baffled, too. I definitely agree, we need good research on this and better if it's somewhat multidisciplinary. Team work is not one of our strengths, but we really need the perspectives of pol sci, econ, psych, etc. This is touching all social sciences!

That being said, I live in Europe but grew up in Argentina. I've seen populist leaders my whole life, but this is the first time we also have a right wing populist in power. We need to put an extra effort to understand why right wing populists are being so successful in so many different countries!
