Trumps attacks on reproductive health around the world (and health more generally, but make no mistake whose health his real target is - women) had me thinking about this piece @saraedavies.bsky.social & I wrote 5 (!) years ago academic.oup.com/isq/article/... Still holds

A ceasefire doesn’t end a genocide. From the Herero & Nama genocide to the Holocaust to the man-made famines that forged the global south, genocidal projects often achieve the most harm and extermination not through bullets and bombs but the purposeful spread of disease and starvation.

There is a risk that Trump's rampage through health + endless 'harnessing the power of AI' will result in a doubling-down on more PPPs. In @thelancet.bsky.social we caution against more of the same & need to think about the PPPs we need not the ones we have www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

There's been some uncertainty on the effects/implementation of the #PEPFAR work stoppage order. We know for sure that many clinics have been told to stop distributing drugs already in stock. Re mid term effects-I am deeply concerned that existing US contracts will tie up global HIV drug supply.🧵1/

Brilliant to present themes from #Unheard to colleagues @qmul-wiph.bsky.social @qmulfmd.bsky.social at their health inequalities seminar series today! Huge thanks to @sarapaparini.bsky.social for the invite. We discussed epistemic injustice including exploitation and how they play out in medicine.

We don't need a wider UK definition of terrorism. I already speak to many individuals who have been unjustly caught up in counterterror legislation - many simply for being Muslim. A new definition will not stop violence, but it will further harm Muslim communities and civil rights in Britain.

In light of the AHA's unconscionable veto of the members' vote, it's worth reading this excellent & prescient article by Hajir & Qato on how scholasticide operates (precisely via such institutional silences & silencing): www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Free Palestine.

Really, truly hope that the ceasefire holds - but this must not be the end of demanding accountability and redress for the genocide that has been perpetrated by Israel against the Palestinians, and the material and ideological support our governments lent it to do so.

Re-upping this recent report by the Runnymede Trust as Islamophobia in the UK (and elsewhere) gets more and more intense and targeted and dangerous www.runnymedetrust.org/publications...

The Telegraph calling for the term Islamophobia to be dropped is so cynical considering Islamophobia is being stoked by the far right around 'grooming gangs'. An anti-Muslim piece, with Robert Jenrick (who wants to ban Arabic words) Fiyaz Mughal & usual suspects. www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/202...

Humanitarian teams from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have gained access to northern Gaza and are shocked by the dire state of hospitals there.

I was bored, so...'Could the World Health Organisation survive if Trump stopped funding it?' andrewharmer.org/2024/12/22/c...

This is becoming the mainstream, consensus position in the global humanitarian / human rights community. It should be recognised and treated as such. Not just in the general discourse, but by policymakers above all. They have a specific obligation to prevent genocide. Active facilitation is criminal

During my PhD I experienced severe anxiety and depression, along with suicide ideation. Thankfully I got help and I'm still here. As a student I went to find a book mental illness and how to cope during a PhD and didn't find one. That's how "Managing Your Mental Health During Your PhD" came to be.

AMR is listed as a major security threat in Security plans around the world, including the UK. And yet.... Gaza www.thebureauinvestigates.com/stories/2024... by @misbahsk.bsky.social

Thoughtful essay by @esmat.bsky.social & Maya Wind in South Atlantic Quarterly - speaks to the question of what the student protests over Gaza achieved. A reminder that how we define success/failure depends on the timeframe we adopt, and what we see as markers of change.

Relevant to some of the orientalist discourse reacting to the fall of Assad 👇 "From discourse to practice: Orientalism, western policy and the Arab uprisings": academic.oup.com/ia/article/9...

Thinking this morning of all my Syrian friends, many of whom I first met in a refugee camp in Greece in 2015. They spoke of bring tortured in Assad’s prisons, the pain of having to leave family behind, and the scent of the fruit trees in Damascus. May they find home again.

I see alot of "Assad is bombing hospitals like Israel now" Assad's been bombing hospitals for 13 years straight, that framing somewhat implies that Israel raised the atrocity bar for Assad, essentially relieving him of the full responsibility he bears for red lines he's crossed.

An insightful event about a really insightful book on global health politics in an age of global ‘polycrisis’. Really great to hear from @profsophieharman.bsky.social and @apapamichail.bsky.social on 2nd ed of Global Health Governance, covering crucial global health issues in the past decade.

Now Amnesty calling it a Genocide. Israel's government and state officials responsible for the crime of genocide must be held accountable.

NEW: Human rights organization Amnesty International has released a 296-page report concluding that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. The group joins Holocaust historians, United Nations experts, and a growing number of nations worldwide in doing so.

A really cool event happening tomorrow, please do come along! (And also read the book, it's great)
