I think this quote is mostly wrong and in general an unfortunate exemplar or the problem I’m talking about.

ah, but at least they're left neatly upright, unlike these shotgunned beers left behind by our local American youths

Original paper here, very readable and worth your time: pic.plover.com/knuth-GOTO.pdf One thing not in there is often that 3% causing a problem is not where the hot path is supposed to be (you have a performance bug). But advice is the same. Find where your program is taking time, then fix it.
comment in response to post
The sooner you know where that code is the better, because that can guide to to making sure that’s fast. This also help you catch problems before you've written so much code that fixing it is going to take ages.

Here's the quote in context. It's good advice! But it's clear about how you absolutely need to spend time on that 3%. Key is to get your project into a state where you can continuously identify the 3% whenever you add new code.

you missed the footnote that all statues need to have been officers in the confederacy

oh also the US is a net exporter to UK but they got tariffed too
comment in response to post
But don't worry, this all makes sense because math. Where the math is just “we import more than we export” with some greek letters thrown in where the values for them cancel out due to the numbers being made up. (4 times 0.25 = 1)

@shahmishal.bsky.social any ideas?

This is my idea of hell. I don’t even like it when my morning coffee vendor recognizes me.

My car’s not spinning out of control, it’s experiencing lateral volatility.

Also, it's interesting that bluesky seems to not surface threads beyond the first post. I've noticed that the first post is what gets all the likes over here, whereas there a mid-thread toot that's just funnier or more the key point might be the one that gets more likes.

And the other problem is, the character limit is lower here. So if I write my posts on mastodon first, they don't fit here. I have to cut them down (which in turn suggests smarts in tapestry won't be easily able to de-dup cross posts).
comment in response to post
I've been finding Bluesky to be excellent as a twitter news+politics replacement. And tapestry has been great to give me a timeline across both. But this is also why I might give up cross-posting, because it's not great to see cross-posts in your feed twice.
