Today I learned that Ethiopia banned imports of non-electric vehicles in early 2024. Home to 130 million people, Ethiopia is the 13th most populous country in the world. Electricity in Ethiopia is ~100% renewable, with ~95% from hydropower and ~5% from wind. electrek.co/2024/02/02/i...

Pierre Poilievre has been in politics for 20 years, he's written 0 legislation; has one of the highest pensions in government. He's voted against the environment & climate nearly 400 times, derailed legislation to benefit workers, and voted against affordable housing initiatives.

Kinda perfectly encapsulates the whole vibe of police that, after brainwormed occupiers terrorized their residents for weeks and made kids miss chemo appointments.... ...they're endorsing the guy who brought those occupiers doughnuts

Fun fact: plastic is basically not recycleable. Whereas 95% of asphalt is recycled, and about 73% of aluminum, only 5-9% of all plastic ever made has been recycled. 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic have ever been produced, and pretty much none of it has ever been recycled.

This is so Canadian. Body Break doing a special elbows up get out to vote segment.

Never forget, all the same awful people in the United States and Russia who wanted Donald Trump to win, badly want Pierre Poilievre to become Canadian Prime Minister. Poilievre, who still refuses to apply for the normal security clearance that would, among other things, identify foreign influences.

Yesterday Kevin Gourlay and Shayn McAskin saw the first wild Vancouver Island marmots of the season! The marmots in this video (also from yesterday) are Onlso and his untagged mate of several years, engaging in some early season pair bonding behaviour!

In the US, domestic cats kill up to 4 billion birds and 22 billion mammals every year—plus hundreds of millions of reptiles and amphibians. In just 5 months, Britain’s 9 million cats killed 57 million mammals and 27M birds. The global toll on biodiversity is staggering. apple.news/ArfCzk6grQ9W...

First Vancouver Island marmots of the year spotted today! Onslo, his untagged mate, and with their 2 year-old and 4 yearlings are all above ground in the Nanaimo Lakes. At the same colony, Ophis is still in hibernation. Alt text for a little more detail.

Hey @theguardian.com, I wrote a bestselling book defending pigeons, so reach out at [email protected] if you'd like to hear a spirited and science-based defense of those perfect birds 🕊️ www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Hello? @cdcofbc.bsky.social ? Why are you advising healthcare workers to wash their hands to prevent measles? @bcndpcaucus.bsky.social - this is embarrassing. And deadly. www.bccdc.ca/health-info/... Anti-science Bonnie Henry has got to go 🤬

Puffin's Bluff

Don’t worry everybody, I’m making a new wizard book for y’all so we can bin the other one

This is absolutely crucial research since mucosal immunity is longer lasting and more effective if we can get it right. It stops the infection at the entry point- our mucosa. And opens the doors to other vaccines that will use mucosal immunity. Please consider volunteering for this. #COVID

Good news: we're hearing Bonnie Henry will not be replacing Theresa Tam as Chief Medical Health Officer of Canada It's unknown if the hiring committee came to this judgment on its own or if the public agitation helped, but either way, good work. We don't need any more science denial.

Look it's an article about me and the amazing Lynda Carter!!

Seeing so many posts this evening from people - friends and strangers - affected by the court ruling today in Scotland. So for clarity: Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Trans rights are human rights. This is not a debate, this is non-negotiable. Block me if you want. IDGAF.

My last thought on this because I need some Offline Time: Because of their fear of being defined as "not neutral" or "biased," the bodies who label "journalists" and adjudicate access are increasingly complicit in the destruction of our information ecosystem. Meet the moment and grow a spine.

via the BC Health Coalition, on reclaiming lab testing from a US takeover -

an unfortunate part of being morally opposed to using a website owned by someone who says “Canada is not a real country” is a lot of B.C.’s core public institutions still exclusively use that website to give incremental updates on news City of Vancouver council meetings, TransLink, BC Ferries, etc.

I had this on hold at my library but purchased it just now instead. I've already burst into ugly tears reading the intro bc it's healing my (food-averse, autistic, picky) inner child to hear that my food preferences aren't bad, stupid, or inconvenient. Thanks so much, @mbrobergmoffitt.bsky.social.

Reminder: Pierre Poilievre STILL refuses to apply for the normal, usual security clearance, the Canadian media is STILL under-reporting that, and I’m STILL choosing to assume under these dangerous and scary circumstances that it’s because he knows that he wouldn’t pass the security check.

Pouring out a little liquor today for the handful of women astronauts who survived years of onerous training, men, and men only to have the press make Katy Perry their equal.

It's time to start reminding people: LILIES ARE DEADLY FOR CATS. The leaves, the petals, the stem, even drinking a bit of vase water or licking a few grains of pollen from their fur can cause fatal kidney failure. ⚠️ www.fda.gov/animal-veter...

Wade Grant’s headquarters is buzzing with activity from volunteers working to make him the next federal representative of the Vancouver Quadra riding. Grant is from Musqueam First Nation. The riding sits within the borders of his territory.

"Diversity is discrimination" is literally Orwellian language, like "war is peace, hate is love, slavery is freedom." You can find it at civilrights.justice.gov

B.C. has been illegally detaining some of the province’s most marginalized people using a law that doesn’t actually permit that practice, says British Columbia Humans Rights Commissioner Kasari Govender. @michellegamage.bsky.social reports.

My cartoon for this week’s @theguardian.com books.

Also, that one would have to make such a vow is really the whole story. Remember when the GOP disavowed Project 2025?

Poilievre: "I can guarantee you there will be no laws restricting abortion passed when I am Prime Minister." Background: 100% of Conservative Party MP's and 2.5% of Liberals were flagged as anti-choice by the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada. #cdnpoli #canpoli www.arcc-cdac.ca/media/anti-c...

Canada needs a CPHO that understands a virus 'can' travel through ductwork and go around corners. Canada needs a CPHO that acts upon ASHRAE 241 and Ontario's SARS Commission Report. Canada needs a CPHO who advocates for precautionary, not reactionary use of respirators in healthcare.

If you can offer support for Sydette in these tough, tough times, she's an amazing person who could really use it. If you can't afford to tip in, please share! That's helping, too!

And yes, my e-friend is an autistic chef!!!

The situation in Ontario is dire. While the intensity of the spread is decreasing, we are still struggling to contain the outbreak. I do think cases are under-reported in both countries, and likely far more in the US due to lack of access to free healthcare.

“I think this is the first time a Cdn poli has crossed that line to officially say they want to interfere to control research topics. It could be a very terrible time for us.” Sound familiar? In Cdn election, Poilievre vows to end ’woke ideology’ in science funding www.science.org/content/arti...

While we're all anti-tariff these days, it would be nice if the BC government dropped their tariff on journalism that requires freedom of information requests.
