Breaking News: In the first case of its kind in Canada, major news outlets are suing OpenAI, accusing the company of illegally using their content.

The dirty little open secret to writing is that no one will ever know, nor care, how many drafts of a thing were written - people will only ever care about the crafted thing, and will, despite all knowledge to the contrary, assume it came out fully formed that way. No one thinks about shit drafts.

The most important thing in writing is to finish. A finished thing can be fixed. A finished thing can be published. A finished thing can be made into a movie. An unfinished thing is just a dream. And dreams fade if you don't hold on tight enough. So finish the thing.

Trying to peel the sticker off a new book like

Not SciFi, but certainly fantastical, this book is really old, but has informed my reading trajectory for many years. Mervyn Peake was utterly unique. 🪐📚

Never forget: READING FOR PLEASURE has the biggest positive impact of any factor on children's life chances. So never stop sharing books with kids. Never stop reading to them, and helping them to read. Never stop changing lives. #literacy #kidlit #books

2.5 years ago I started the Wheel of Time. I wanted to read it before watching the series, not knowing it was 14 books & thousands of words. Tonight, I finished it. It's probably the best series I've ever read, or will ever read. And now I have serious series grief. #books #wheeloftime #wot

At what point in a 'writing career' do you stop going "Aaaa aaaaa aaaaaaaa" and taking photos of your own books at events Because I have not hit that point yet THIS IS STILL SO MINDBLOWINGLY STRANGE AND EXCITING LOOK AT THOSE, I WROTE THOSE

Carl Sagan nailed it back in 1995.

Many of us are echoing @timothysnyder.bsky.social's lesson in On Tyranny, "Do not obey in advance.” A no less vital admonition that deserves attn: STAND OUT “...without that unease, there is no freedom. The moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow."

First post on this thing feels as strange as my first Twitter post. Awkward. Yet hopeful.

Latest book haul. In my house, we don’t call it CRT. We call it history, and we learn about the things that define us as people.

This is how you become a writer: just pick one of the things that is deeply wrong with you. Make it a character. Now send it on a self-help journey or try to kill it. Now call it a book.

Morning, friends. Time to dig back in to all of this. Democracy matters.

‘Our power is patience. We have discovered that writing allows even a stupid person to seem halfway intelligent, if only that person will write the same thought over and over again, improving it just a little bit each time. Anybody can do it. All it takes is time.’ Kurt Vonnegut

The Handmaid's Tale is a good book. But did you know that there's a book written by a Black woman about a post-apocalyptic Earth heavily affected by climate change and societal decline. The book was published in 1993, but is set in 2024 following a presidential election 👀 #BookSky #BlackBookSky

A year from now Twitter's gonna be like a apocalyptic wasteland and people on Bluesky will be doing things like assembling a crack team to go in and rescue beloved accounts still trapped in there

It’s 6:40am at LAX. In line at the convenience store, an older man was having trouble with his credit card and jokingly asked me “can I have your credit card?” I laughed and said “I’m black. Give me YOUR credit card. Reparations.” The black lady working the register burst out laughing. Him: 😮😳🤔😩🤣

Could tonight be the night?

Life is short. Write that novel. Paint that painting. Try new recipes. Learn black magic. Go into the forest at night. Summon a demon. Earn that demon's trust. Become best friends with it. Brag to everyone else about your new cool demon best friend. Knit that sweater.

it’s almost 2025 and you’re telling me I still have to manually write the book I have in my head instead of daydreaming about it and it appearing on my laptop completely edited and ready for publishing? so much for being tech advanced 🙄 #writersproblem 💙📚 #sendhelp

Lots of new folks rolling in, so allow me to reintroduce myself. I’m a TV writer (Star Trek: Picard, Batman: Caped Crusader, Eyes of Wakanda), comic book writer (Anansi Boys, Adora and the Distance, Mace Windu), podcaster (Fatman Beyond), and filmmaker (Splinter, the upcoming Deepest, Darkest).
