Graduate admissions being put on hold because of the chaos...

It looks like more universities (Pitt/Penn) are freezing, pausing, even rescinding admissions offers since we wrote this story last week. (But some, like USC, are now resuming offers) Please reply to this or repost with that info if you know of more. www.statnews.com/2025/02/19/t...

You should read this

In my latest article for @science.org, I reflect on the current challenges faced by early-career researchers, including delays in grant reviews, uncertainty around NIH funding freezes and changes, and the critical need for continued support and advocacy. www.science.org/content/arti...

At least two suits are in the works from the teams that brought the earlier pause cases: A collection of State Attorney Generals and DemocracyForward. The courts can't act until somebody asks them to, and the legal teams need to get their ducks in a row (and they are busy doing this).

“The new administration has, both in broad strokes and in rather backroom bureaucratic ways, stopped the processes by which the N.I.H. funds biomedical research in the nation,” said Vaughn Cooper, a microbiologist at the University of Pittsburgh. Re-sharing – now without the editorializing! “On Friday, Penn notified department chairs that it will cut admissions across graduate programs, a decision faculty members say was made after programs had already accepted students.”

#match2025 #APPIC For anyone who didn't match today, there are some WONDERFUL positions still available in Phase 2. Check us out!

A massive, self-inflicted wound on American higher education.

As you see NIH restrictions and bans lifted now, it’s not a coincidence that happened after a big rally that got coverage all over TikTok and on Maddow. Trump is susceptible to public pressure! They want to do their coup in the dark. As we’ve been saying, science must speak to the public now. 🧪

This is what a personalist presidency looks like: "Investigation follows President Trump's remarks at the Republican GOvernor's Association dinner...that Maine risks losing federal funds."

it's true civic degeneracy. no better than eating fritos and watching snuff films in the basement with a needle in your arm.

I chatted with a program director at NIH for a half hour just now It's clear that the people who make American science happen are doing everything they can to keep making it happen in a very difficult environment They deserve our respect and gratitude

New York Times article now up on Federal Register stuff. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/s... 1/n

🤯🙌🏼 Phenomenal GA Constituent! Pls share! "Tyranny is rising in the White House. A man has declared himself our king. The people would like to know what you, Congressman, are going to do to rein in the megalomaniac in the WH." Americans need to wake up & inject this indignation into their veins!

Just a point of reference for those concerned about NIH indirect costs... 1) Indirect costs alone average 53% of contract costs in the defense industry. 2) The entire NIH budget is ~5% of the DoD budget. 3) Indirect costs / facility costs / whatever you want to call them are part of business.

Bluetorial: The rationale for the “NIH” indirect cost “plan” is based on misunderstood (unintentional or intentional) accounting and math The value of real government transparency

If you don’t match to an #APPIC internship today and are wondering what next, join us Monday evening to get some tips about how to move forward with the process in Phase 2 and beyond. This is not the end! #clinicalpsychology

Mazel tov, @sgrogans.bsky.social . I'm very jealous of the Ohio State team. You got a good one!

This is in fact a real picture and it will work nicely in the ads next year about the military families devastated by Elon's illegal firings.

Also just now, NIH intranet was updated re its communications pause. NIH scientists can now resume travel to and participation in conferences. The pause on updating the Federal Register remains in place -- which means grant-making is effectively frozen, in violation of court orders.

Trump's NIH freeze will kill millions of valuable research animals and the research they were involved with

In the midst of all of this (hands waving frantically) chaos, not sure we are talking enough about this. CA is set to slash their state funding of UCs and CSUs by 8-10%. Impacts will be huge, and widely felt, for students, staff, and faculty. calmatters.org/education/hi...

Cuts to NSF expected to be at 50% reduction in force for an independent agency that fuels discovery and innovation. "The NSF budget was $9B, or 0.13% of the total [budget]." This is not about fiscal prudence. This is about killing universities. nanoscale.blogspot.com/2025/02/the-...

"The silence with which many of us and our institutions are meeting this moment must be challenged" Thank you @jama.com for stating this. The earlier (and some ongoing) silence from academic organizations & institutions prior to the NIH cuts was deafening and disheartening. #standupforscience

#ScinceIsReal The fact that we're in this place, that I'm breathlessly following the live stream of a court case, that science funding is largely frozen, that I may have to lay off trusted hardworking staff, all of it. My heart is shattered.

They need a @jeremymberg.bsky.social bug in the ear.

NIH indirects case update: Hearing ongoing now, and I'll try to live tweet some notable exchanges. Prior to more detailed arguments, Judge Kelley starts off with a few point questions to both sides: (I'm paraphrasing here)

This is a chilling reminder that even if the courts fight off most of the Doge attacks on NIH, MAGA patsy Congress Critters can still block grant awards. Of course, blocking federal $ awards to their own constituencies might not seem smart to most of them.
