They use a similar system to do very different things - the original (Arabian) is a chaotic story generator where Arthurian works to immerse you in the sweep of the legends. I like Arthurian K better - but that's primarily because I love Arthurian legends. Not getting rid of Arabian N, though.

A very good friend joined me at an invitational gaming weekend… and at the end said, “You guys like to win but you love to play.” Pretty much sums it up for me.

The Broadway Game - been playing with friends since before my wife of 34 years & I started dating. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/47...

"I also think that auto-calculating DRMs would “hide” some of the key elements of the game – how do I balance everything I need/want to do while saving enough action points in reserve for the inevitable unforeseen crisis?" 3/3

"By the same token, I find it much easier to play large games in-person… it’s easier to scan the table for information than it is to try & figure out where the developers have hidden a view or menu. 2/3

No objections to a Steam version - but as I wrote in my review, "The job of the President is an immense task – and the size of the board(s) play a role in giving the player the correct “feel” of that weight." 1/3 opinionatedgamers.com/2023/10/11/t...

I actually subscribed to SPI’s Ares magazine (where the original J. Butterfield games in the Away Team lineage were published)… can’t wait for Away Team to land! boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/23...

It is. I’m about 20 hours in… and I think I’m at 40% of the story/content. And it wasn’t inexpensive… but so far worth every penny.

Yes... and since you reminded me, Dead Reckoning (especially with the Saga expansions added in) has the same sandbox-y vibe.

The new game from Far Off Games - Arydia: The Paths We Dare Tread - is a fantasy RPG-like co-op experience that has the same level of delight & cleverness as Xia... but it's a campaign rather than a single game. I'm enjoying it immensely.

I forced PowerPoint to save the presentation I’d been working on for 2 hours… despite it telling me over & over that it couldn’t save it due to an error. Take that, incalcitrant hunk of software!

Best gamer story about Airlines (from my old website, Game Central Station): "We once forgot to add the Wertungs. Our comments were all along the lines "we must get one soon" but none of us twigged the true explanation until there were too few cards left in the pile..."

For me, Airlines: Europe has more "game-y" stuff but doesn't flow as nicely as Union Pacific. This could be chronological snobbery, as I played/owned UP before I played Airlines (either edition)... but I'm choosing not to believe that. :-)

@hendrikbreuer.bsky.social is correct - choose UP.

Well deserved honor, @tomlehmann.bsky.social... of course, I put it in my top ten #boardgames yet again in 2024. akapastorguy.blogspot.com/2024/06/2-ra...

From @kevinwilson42.bsky.social: Imagine Clippy saying, "It looks like you want me to steal someone else's work for you and then burn a drum of crude oil to celebrate." and you're on the right track of what modern "AI" products do.

I'm a big fan of Pathfinder (1974) which is essentially Battleship, except you're attempting to find the "cheese" in the maze. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/28...

It's on the list... but I just got my shipping notice for Arydia, so my game table's gonna be "reserved" for a bit. :-)

What's cool is not just the variety of characters (which is awesome) but the variety of ways in which the design team has messed with each deck composition to capture thematic elements of those characters. Makes the game an absolute pleasure to play.

Dune: Imperium is great. Other recent ones I really like are Ascending Empires: Zenith Edition and Distilled.

Agreed - the craziest one I've experienced recently was Kathmandu (Stefan Feld)... which has a player aid card in the same size as the FFG status cards for Descent. In other words, TINY. And there are multiple advertising cards in the larger card deck that could have been used. Sheesh.

I could not push my way through the graphic novel adaption - though I gave it the ol' college try. And, honestly, the only Stephen King books I've loved were The Dead Zone and The Green Mile.

I’ve played my copy twice - once solo & once competitive. It’s an interesting twist on “regular” Everdell… looking forward to playing again.

Agreed. We’ve had one Final Five win… but the “best” win was a car thrown across the finish line by a Blast Off! damage tile.

I have never seen the Big Rig win. I have never seen anyone having a bad time playing the Big Rig. :-)
