Alternately: “it could write the best most efficient and error proof code in the history of technology, and it still would not be worth the ecological and political cost”

Happy pub day to @hzeavin.bsky.social's "Mother Media: Hot and Cool Parenting in the Twentieth Century"! Read an excerpt of "Mother Media" in LARB Quarterly, no. 44: Pressure: lareviewofbooks.org/article/the-...

Wow the cover of the 1973 Hew Report (precursor to 1974's Data Privacy Act) is *wild*. ia601702.us.archive.org/8/items/reco...

Excellent thread! [He corrected: "deceiving" ⬇️ should be "describing."]

We told you that antiporn "age-verification" laws wouldn't stop at Pornhub. Texas legislators are now proposing that conservative parents can now sue bookstores, movie theaters, LGBTQ events, health fairs, art galleries, museums for exposing their children to material "harmful to minors"

“If a pact is formed, the universities shall “commit meaningful funding to a shared or distributed defense fund”. The fund will be in turn used to provide “immediate and strategic support to any member institution under direct political or legal infringement.” #defendhighered

god this is a good set of questions to ask about things

Our book Queers at the Table w/ @arsenalpulp.bsky.social is in part the result of a research creation project/ test pilot project under a SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant. To share our findings about this process, we produced a zine (free online): Drawn Together www.queerfoodconference.com/p/zine.html

There it is.

It's now at over 640 international students and recent graduates at over 120 colleges & universities whose visas have been revoked. www.insidehighered.com/news/global/...

well this is interesting news for anyone that has ever changed their name... oh and that group includes mostly women and trans people? weird coincidence

Know Your Butts. From the Eve Sedgwick Papers.

There are so many amazing teachers out there. One middle school teacher in Texas is so supportive of her students + has been reaching out to me over the year asking for sources to help support their documentary/ research project. The 7th graders won county, then state, + are now off to nationals!!

"Adjusting for inflation, tenure-track faculty are now paid 10.2 percent less than they were before the pandemic, compared to 7.6 percent less for non-tenure-track teaching faculty and 2.8 percent less for staff, the release said." www.insidehighered.com/news/quick-t...

This will destroy the foundation of scholarship itself. How can we build on the knowledge already there if we cannot find it?

The only way forward, that I can see, requires both courage and collective action. If we’re not going to fight for our students and our scholarship, then what the hell are we doing anyway?

Married women whose names changed? Blocked. Trans people whose ID doesn’t match outdated records? Targeted. Communities of color already facing systemic barriers? Further marginalized. Let’s not pretend this isn’t exactly what the authors of the SAVE Act intend. #HandsOffHerVote

Look what arrived in the mail!! Postcards promoting Queers at the Table ( @arsenalpulp.bsky.social ) and the fall catalogue. to pre-order arsenalpulp.com/Books/Q/Quee.... @mcgillarts.bsky.social

In this morning's library staff meeting, our digital repositories team talked about consulting with their partners around the country about preservation amidst censorship + take-downs; they're emphasizing *analog* formats.

This is high art

Can we get more of this? “The Japanese American National Museum will ‘scrub nothing,’ Fujioka said, and instead will highlight the importance of DEI. “Our community is based on diversity, equity is guaranteed to us in the Constitution, and inclusion is what we believe in,” Fujioka said.

Sharing this call for participants @msvuhalifax.bsky.social

WOW: Thousands are currently protesting in Boston. This is just one of more than 1200 'Hands Off' protests underway today across the nation as people rise up against the Trump-Musk regime. (via Rob Way)

Spectacular view of 100,000 people attending the #HandsOff march in NYC

Neat thing at this conference: a librarian crocheted a scarf based on how many emails they sent in a year -- posted with their permission.

This is my song. ALSO, this is your CHANCE to move people in the direction you want. Get out there and make YOUR OFFERINGS. If you have ideas, this is your chance! TEST THEM OUT WITH ACTUAL PEOPLE.

read a great article this morning by @axelledemus.bsky.social www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

If you want to know how the dismantlement of the US government is going, there’s a website for that. www.project2025.observer

We join @humanitiesall to condemn actions taken by the federal govt against the National Endowment for the Humanities. https://bit.ly/4i69BkJ Cuts to the NEH will ripple through the entire scholarly ecosystem, harm communities in every state & contribute to destroying our shared cultural heritage.

Constant cuts to programs, funding, staffing, and hiring freezes, layoffs/firings-- just all of it is SO MUCH-- on top of the constant fascism (yes I get that they are intertwined)-- it's just A LOT.
