Multiple reports of drivers doing spontaneous sieg heil salutes at protesters today, including in one case from someone I know personally. What is being normalized is monstrous and dangerous; every day we step closer to the abyss

If the Catholic Church were to elect a new Pope, currently there are 138 Cardinals eligible to vote. 110 were created by Pope Francis, 23 by Pope Benedict XVI, 5 by JPII. While theoretically possible to come from outside this group, the next Pope is almost certain to be one of these 138 Cardinals.

Building on strengths offers greater returns than remediating weakness. The strengths of today's Democratic party lie in folks who believe in education. Democrats need to double down on appealing to educated voters & voters who want their kids to have an education. GOP cuts education, Dems don't.

Vanderbilt, UPitt and Penn so far. I am sure more will come

Atop @politico.com's MOST READ list.

The best description I've ever read of how Trump uses outrage and opposition to do his work for him. What he is waiting for is a plan. Today he has Project 2025, Musk's Doge, & Imperial USA as his outrage. He's waiting for a plan from the EU and Dems to pivot. www.politico.com/magazine/sto...

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

Yikes.

A pundit tried to argue with @jamellebouie.net just yesterday that Trump isn’t trying to resegregate the bureaucracy. But this stuff would make Woodrow Wilson proud.

“Over and over again, they advised higher ed leaders: If there isn’t a federal or state law yet—or there’s wiggle room within the law—don’t overcomply. “ www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

The rest of the room, almost all men and I assume elected officials, remained silent as Trump levied threats to state funding like a junior mob boss. Janet Mills, however, understands that if you let this shit pass without resistance, he'll come back for even more next time. He will never stop.

#alphabetchallenge #weekHforheroes #blacksky #blackhistorymonth Happy birthday to the great John Lewis, born this day in 1940. Let's all celebrate him by getting into some good trouble.

Can't wait to see Christian nationalists wearing chainsaws around their necks instead of crosses. Because this is their God now. (In other words, if you don't immediately recognize MAGA as blasphemy, you are so far down the theological rabbit hole that I don't even know if Jesus can help.)

There’s something happening in this country.

Will there be an effective response to the GOP attempt to undermine the traditional constitutional order? Have we entered a 5th Republic or an end of the systems that have governed us for 250 years? 1776-1788 1st Republic 1789-1865 2nd Republic 1866-1932 3rd Republic 1933-2024 4th Republic 2025?

We are now finding bird flu in deer mice and house mice in Washington State. H5N1 is advancing along the evolutionary ladder—affecting birds, mammals, and humans. This is not speculation; it’s a timeline.

Trump threats create the conditions for a financial crisis. If the full faith and credit of the US government is endangered, the economic fallout would be massive. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/o...

This is pretty straightforward authoritarianism: if you don't support my toxic businesses, I will use my government power to kneecap yours.

It's clear the GOP no longer wants women to change their names when they get married. In a blow against the patriarchy, women who take their husband's last names would be unable to provide proper identification in order to vote.

Resistance comes in many forms. Slow it down. Stand it the way. Tie whatever knots you can.

Sanna Marin throwing some impressive shade here: ”To start, Europe must rid itself of the dangerous illusion that it is weak—and stop acting like it. There is no trade-off between investing in the defence of Europe as a whole and investing in the defence of Ukraine—they are one and the same.”

GOP answer to education and free speech: Arrest the Librarians. Of course, if they just banned teaching slaves to read .... kfgo.com/2025/02/20/l...

Books designed to be read only by human eyes are different from books designed to be read by machines, which is why Google will tell you that the phrase “shake my booty” can be found in an 1863 English translation of Don Quixote.

Patel has been confirmed 51-49, with Murkowski and Collins joining the Democrats to vote no.

Punchbowl News reporting that Trump and Hegseth plan to start firing top generals, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, who was overwhelmingly Senate-approved for a 4-year term back in 2023. No one can say they weren’t warned.

STORY + DATA: The scale of Canadian efforts to boycott US goods is becoming clear. New border data shows crossborder traffic has utterly plummeted in the last month. Southbound traffic during the recent holiday weekend dropped by more than 40% from last year. fvcurrent.com/p/border-tra...

This is a very good and sobering story that urges Europeans in particular that they cannot trust America now and need to make changes for themselves—and especially Ukraine. @anneapplebaum.bsky.social

JUST IN: The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets just announced that it is implementing new testing requirements for all poultry entering New York’s live bird markets.

"What I remember from 2016, is one reason Republicans liked Trump so much is because he would FIGHT! Right now, that's the kind of FIGHTING Democrats want from THEIR leaders." -Tim Miller

"However, one resident who was born with an XY pattern, which would normally signify a biological male, has female genitalia and identifies as a woman. Yet on her wedding license, she’d be forced to identify as a male." dailymontanan.com/2025/02/19/c... #LGBTQIA

I understand the motion on Mayor Adams case is to dismiss without prejudice so it could be brought again. This is the potential corruption, the potential indictment, but what if the judge agrees to the dismissal, yet makes it with prejudice so the charges could not be refiled? It removes the threat.

I just called out a student for using AI to write an extended abstract for my class. 3 of the 4 articles she cited are fake. They are by real people, in real journals, and the titles are similar to topics the authors study. But the papers do not exist! It is wild that ChatGPT invents articles.

People don't realize how lazy GenAI use makes 99.9% of users. We've watched real-time as students (and professors) cheating with it has gotten lazier and lazier. Something like "checking the references" just isn't going to happen. We'll see things devolve rapidly unless there are consequences.

AI gives the wrong answers, invents quotes, and summarizes inaccurately. It also can't tell you the source of information and will potentially give you a different answer the next time you ask the same question. It's impossible to tell in AI what is real and what is BS. www.bbc.com/mediacentre/...

Hochul wants to be seen as taking action without actually ever taking action, is my read. She’s the Susan Collins of New York. Everything terrible has her “concerned.” But she’s beyond reluctant to actually exert power or effort to change it. I’d be stunned if she does.

NY City Council speaker Adrienne Adams: "With the resignation of deputy mayors, it has become clear that Mayor Adams has now lost the confidence and trust of his own staff, his colleagues in government, and New Yorkers. He now must prioritize New York City and New Yorkers, step aside and resign."
