Our Cancer Cell Commentary reviews progress on chemical probes since Arrowsmith et al. (Nat Chem Biol 2015) and the launch of the Chemical Probes Portal. We highlight key issues, propose solutions, and outline a path to a quality probe for every human protein. #ChemicalProbes

Do you know (or are you) a senior scientist in the USA who might like to move to Canada in the near future? The 2026 call for CERCs (Canada Excellence Research Chairs) was posted last month: 🧪 ⚛️ 🔭 🇨🇦

Three UHN scientists have received funding to advance research on two rare diseases—one affecting the muscles and another impacting the liver. This can lead to new treatments. #RareDiseaseDay 🔗https://conscience.ca/news/dmos-program-funds-three-projects-working-towards-treatments-for-rare-diseases/

I cannot think of anything that embodied America’s (former) values than the thousands of passionate Americans (formerly) affiliated with USAID programs who were out there trying to make life better for those not lucky enough to be the recipient of a $300m gift from Daddy.

For the second year in a row, UHN is ranked third among the world's best hospitals by @newsweek.com! 🏆 This recognition reflects of our unwavering commitment to excellence in care, research, and innovation to shape the future of health care and create #AHealthierWorld for all!

The analogy of what’s going on in the US to the Cultural Revolution is pretty apt.

Science advances our economic, physical, and social and cultural wellbeing, and is key to a sustainable future. However, we live in times of great change, and the values that have driven science for the benefit of humanity are under threat. Read our statement here: royalsociety.org/news/2025/02...

The brachyury structure, along with crystallographic fragment-based screening and enhanced compounds, may enable the development of chemical probes and future drugs. This approach could also be applied to other hard-to-drug transcription factors and proteins.

I learned it took only 22 years to build this and the grounds. Toronto transit, the gauntlet is thrown.

He shoots, he scores! Oh Canada!

🔬 The Chemical Probes Hackathon is underway in Vienna! Experts from academia & industry, along with international students, are reviewing kinase inhibitors & PROTACs—advancing biomedical research through collaboration. Excited to see today’s findings! 🚀 #EUFEPS #chemicalprobes

Seeing more and more talks looking at proteins purified from cells (or in cells) by cryo-EM and discovering new protein interactions by “seeing” them in place. It’s just so, so cool.

Canada, step up and double down on support for science and innovation. Now’s the time says @richardgold.bsky.social

About NIH Program Officers. I have troves of emails from various PO’s over past years. Emails sent at nights, on weekends, filled with passion about science and new ideas. They’re one of the shining lights of the US funding system. Canada is so envious. Unbelievable to watch the US own goal.

Pro tip for travelling light on business. This trip, one carry on, one month. To minimize laundry trips, wear coffee coloured pants and have one sacrificial shirt only for breakfasts. Proved their worth today!

With both RFK Jr and Gabbard confirmed, two people who rose to prominence spreading conspiracy theories about public health and national intelligence will now run the U.S. government agencies in charge of those areas. For someone studying these conspiracy theories for a decade... this is nauseating.

My son, who’s lives in BC and is a great skier, has taken up telemarking to challenge himself. But he ain’t a small guy, so evidently his buddies are calling him “Teletubby”!

Whenever you hear someone sneer about scientific research that seems useless to them — “they’re studying the spit of lizards?!” — remind them that’s exactly how we got Ozempic. globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

About to e-deposit the $200 bribe from the Ontario Conservative Party, sent to all Ontario tax payers (voters). This clinches it! Doug Ford’s got my vote in the provincial election next month!

More than 25 years after FXR agonist GW4604 was described by now @thesgc.bsky.social scientist Tim Willson, it is still being used in cutting edge papers. High quality #ChemicalProbes are expensive to discover, but they’re the gift that keeps on giving. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Embedded in Derek’s post is a frightening yet plausible conclusion. That some politicians are reluctant to counter Trump’s actions out of fear for their (and their family’s) personal safeties.

Senator, physician and vaccine advocate Bill Cassidy votes to advance anti-vaccine Kennedy’s candidacy to lead public health in the US. A potential disaster for children in the US and beyond. Perhaps Cassidy took the Hypocritic oath instead of the Hippocratic oath. Shame on him.

We are uniting experts in ML, computational chemistry, and drug discovery to get hands-on experience with AIRCHECK. Co-developed by SGC and @uhntoronto.bsky.social, AIRCHECK is an open data platform designed to enhance predictive models in drug discovery. event.fourwaves.com/aircheckwork...

Let’s see how that Hippocratic oath fares. Bill Cassidy, a U.S. Senator who dedicated his medical career to saving lives through vaccination is evidently “struggling” on the decision whether to vote for an anti-vaxxer to be put in charge of American healthcare. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/04/u...

Feeling betrayed by tariff threats, Canadians do their part by avoiding buying American goods when possible. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

There is nothing "conservative" or "right-wing" about Patel, Gabbard or RFK Jr. They rather represent a new form of obscurantist radicalism: anti-evidence, anti-science, and opposed to the rule of law www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

If you can, do something, speak up and act up. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

RONALD REAGAN (1988): We should be aware of the demagogues who are ready to declare a trade war against our friends, weakening our economy, our national security, and the entire free world—all while cynically waving the American flag.

What we need now are some American heroes. Hero Senators who vote against dangerous conspiracy theorists. Hero Congresspeople who forcefully take back their constitutional right to hold the purse strings of the nation. Heroes who work to keep America great.

Thanks America. With friends like you, who needs enemies. Sincerely, Canada.

🧪 If I were Canadian PM I would immediately: 1. Create a new $15B science fund 2. Offer any credentialed US scientist funding for lab startup and replacement of NIH grants if they move to Canada 3. Immediate permanent residency 4. Citizenship after 2 years Overnight a science superpower

Time for Canada, its provinces and its political parties to pull as one and align with other nations to stand up to the tariff bully, it appears. Yield now and it’s never going to stop (at least for two more years when a blue wave will sweep through the US Congress). Let’s go Team Canada!

>20 yrs ago, while at GW, now @thesgc.bsky.social UNC scientist Tim Willson and his team invented (and then shared) LXR agonist GW3965. And that GW3965 #chemicalprobe is still having an impact, including in a new study in which we played a small role. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Fun listening to Karina Machado tell the story about how her team did so well in the #Cache compound prediction challenge. Scientists in the global south can compete with anyone on the planet if given a level playing field!

Scientific fraud makes headlines, but it’s thankfully rare and is (eventually) corrected. What’s far more concerning, in my opinion, are the thousands of papers that mislead because they use poorly characterized reagents, like antibodies, cell lines and chemical probes. www.nytimes.t/2025/01/24/o...

Started off this morning emailing my Senators and Congressman about the NIH and the potential damage being done by unnecessary disruptions. They need to hear from us loud and clear. Constituents matter to them as one of the primary purposes of a politician is to get re-elected (and its their job).

Roman/Nazi salutes, demonizing the press, threatening judges, pardoning violent criminals, expansionist threats against other countries. Déjà vu. Legitimately frightening.
