Last night's Pentagon massacre is much more than realized. Not just firing the black CJCS and first woman CNO but all the senior JAG officers and hiring a man who just joined 3 different crypto firms tied to Kushner and Thiel as Chairman. I did a deep dive into it open.substack.com/pub/fpwellma...

Two weeks from now the crew of a nuclear submarine are going to see this email and the subsequent one firing them all.

So if you get that OPM email, my only advice is to recognize (1) it is asking you to give them an excuse to fire you (2) it will be processed by an LLM. If you want to leave, good luck to you, thank you for your service. If not, reply in a way designed to not give their LLM bot those free excuses.

The freeze apparently does NOT apply to the School of Medicine at Pitt.

Very pumped to attend the @standupforscience.bsky.social at Philly on March 7th at City Hall! Sign up here to be kept in the loop for details. www.eventbrite.com/e/stand-up-f...

Dear all federal employees, DO. NOT. RESPOND. Default to your union now. Musk has zero official authority in government. Dare him to fire the entire federal government on Monday.

1. Monday - fell apart 2. Tuesday - broke my heart 3. Wednesday - same 4. Thursday - didn't even start 5. Friday - I'm in love

Re the calls to spam the OPM email address, genuinely curious—if they REALLY plan to use this to fire or otherwise harass fed employees, would spamming the address help or hurt (or neither)? Like, they're not going to read them, they'll just use some dumb search/AI. So what's the effect of the spam?

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

Federal workers launch a new site to share inside information about DOGE

Three things that make the U.S. the envy of the world: 1) Professionalized military with strong norm of civilian control 2) Higher education and cutting-edge scientific research 3) Ability to welcome immigrants and attract the “best and the brightest” All three are under threat.

DOGE’s expenses have risen above 40 million, with weekly costs now exceeding 10 million. We will release an updated DOGE staff list soon.

A new bat coronavirus that has the capacity to spread to humans, similar to the one that caused the COVID-19 pandemic, has been discovered by a Chinese researcher. Good thing we are completely prepared this time. www.newsweek.com/new-coronavi...

Idiocracy was a documentary

We need volunteers for states that don’t yet have events! I’m one of the organizers in CA and can answer questions about how the process has been! #standupforscience

Every day, they're testing how far they can take this. If they think they can take it all the way, they absolutely will. But we don't have to let them.

Overflow angry crowd for town hall with Glenn Grothman in Oshkosh this morning ... www.wpr.org/news/glenn-g...

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

WaPo Page One: “If you’re going to just yell at me, that’s not going to be an effective town hall,” McCormick said .. “But we’re pissed!” a woman shouted. #GA07 www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Amen to that.

Interesting. Politico Nightly just out now has a piece which is directionally identical albeit perhaps tonally different from my piece this morning about the beginning of the anti-Elon backlash www.politico.com/newsletters/...

Hearing multiple reports that members of the current ACIP were fired. I hate it when my predictions come true. bsky.app/profile/dave...

Call to Action: No human is illegal rally. Coachella, California. Feb 22 at 12:30PM to 4:30PM "Stop the deportations." #3E #USProtest #ISProtest #ProtestCA #Feb22

CSPAN Caller from West Virginia: I’m a diabetic and I’m on Medicare. When Biden was in there, my insulin was $6 for a 28 day supply. I just went to CVS, it went back up to $80…

The technical term in political science is ratfuckery.

Call to Action: civil and human rights protest. Savannah, Georgia on February 22 at 4PM. “WE BEAT 'EM BEFORE. WE’ll BEAT ‘EM AGAIN” #3E #USProtest #ProtestGA #ProtestSavannah #Feb22

THE! BOSTON! GLOBE! Huge thank you to @kaylazar.bsky.social for covering our movement so perfectly. @standupforscience.bsky.social #standupforscience2025 #scienceforall #sciencenotsilence

I have been told that "several" members of the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices are being fired

Gov. Janet Mills of Maine threatened legal action after President Trump said he would withhold funding to her state unless she complied with his executive order banning transgender athletes from women’s sports. Read more: nyti.ms/3F2nn9a

In a small trial, nearly half of pancreatic cancer patients who received an mRNA vaccine had no signs of relapse after three years. Dr. Vinod Balachandran from @mskcancercenter.bsky.social joins us to discuss the results and what they could mean for cancer treatment.

"Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob."  —FDR, 1936

When even the New York Post has to publish this, you know you fucked up.

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

Already bruised by the Trump administration’s first round of firings of federal workers, employees at NIH faced more bad news. NIH’s 27 institute directors were told this week that the agency must cut staffing back to 2019 levels, or at least 10% below its 2024 tally. scim.ag/3EP8gjy

The Pentagon will fire 5,400 civilian workers next week.

Powerful. Tomorrow’s front page of the most influential weekly publication in Germany. “BETRAYED. First Zelensky, Soon Us? The radical departure of the US from its allies.”

From an email viewed by me sent from the acting NIH director Matthew Memoli just a bit ago: "The last few weeks have been difficult for many of us, but we must prepare for further changes ahead. When this transition is behind us, NIH might look different... but our mission will remain unchanged."

trump wants to be able to tell the USPS not to deliver ballots to blue states www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

“We’re fucked.” Good write-up in Nature on how the current administration has used the Federal Register as a workaround to block NIH spending without seeming to violate the injunction against the spending freeze. If it’s not rectified by September, billions of $$ for science research will be lost.

It’s not just that Trump’s agenda isn’t popular. It’s that new Post polling shows that views of his agenda comes down to Republicans vs. everyone else. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

Quick story on this and some other things I've heard from inside NIH:

This will be happening across the US soon, should the all out attack on funding science and universities even partially succeed.

Three updates: 1. The Justice Department has deleted a database tracking federal police misconduct. The database was first proposed in 2020 following the police killing of George Floyd.

The press has a big role to play in shining light of what is going on...
