all KH clouds are the best KH clouds

I always wind up at some point in the regular semester thinking I will never have a new research idea ever again, and it's amazing how having time to actually think can change that

I'm going to use them as incentive for getting my grading done (bribing myself for good behaviour)

Big brain right here. What are greek letters if not the OG emojis?
comment in response to post
At one point last semester I was using ξ (xi!) and ζ to try to match the textbook's notation and literally apologized to my students for everything being "squiggly greek letters" so I'm on board

throw ξ in the mix and I'm there

okay I spent weeks last fall getting laminar plumes when I wanted turbulent ones and apparently you were just hogging them all along?

Never had a snow day at U of Alberta either (the rumour was that it had to hit -50 for it to happen 😬), but had a couple of cold-weather work-from-home days at OSU and UW. It was always strange to me, but then I guess Edmonton had snow plows and the others did not!

I made movies building off of the "internal waves" and "internal tide by a seamount" oceananigans examples when I taught GFD last year (clima.github.io/Oceananigans...) – happy to share if those look like what you're after! I also like the ones others have shared already :)

you are amazing 🤩

I also struggle with this for international friends – everyone is either whatsapp or fb messenger :(

I have those moments too where I think, I can't believe my job includes me telling people about my actual favourite thing to think about. Enjoy!

I remember asking about what kind of mentoring they provide to new faculty (formal? informal?) and what the breakdown in practice was between teaching/research/service, if that helps!

Congrats! I'm 4 years in now. I'd say: - be willing to update your original vision of your group as you go along - don't grow your group too fast - find a group of fellow new-ish PIs in your field (peer support has been SO IMPORTANT for me!) I'm not a lab person but I'm happy to chat more :)

my parents decided to cancel a planned US vacation because they "don't want to give them money" which feels like the other side of that coin
