Snow is cute at first, but after the first few times, everyone is ready for spring.

Global neoliberalism strikes again. Welp, I'm priced out. www.forbes.com/sites/shivan...

"The self-made myth conceals the multitude of barriers to wealth accumulation and reinforces the notion that if you’re poor, it’s because you’re lazy or made bad choices." @teenvogue.bsky.social with the facts. www.teenvogue.com/story/billio...

I was in a cafe sitting next to two friends - a young man and young women - setting up Hinge dating app accounts, when the man went on a rant about the possible pronouns one could choose. Don't worry, he qualified it with, "Look, I'm a progressive, I'm an ally, but..."

I'm glad to hear some people are enjoying this gloomy, joyless adaptation. Dorfman's criticisms ring true, I think, if you have ever read the book and been enchanted by it. The adaptation has its merits - cinematically - but does not come close to capturing the essence of Gabo's masterpiece.

Can we stop with the life hacks?

Breaking news: David Lynch, the surrealist filmmaker who bridged the mainstream and avant-garde, exploring the sinister recesses of the human psyche with an unsettling blend of melodrama, whimsy and nightmarish horror, has died. He was 78.

"When it comes to prestige, the literary man appears to be thriving — he’s just, crucially, less likely to also be straight and white than he used to be." www.vox.com/culture/3929...

I am begging computer scientists to read more broadly and deeply. It's great that you've discovered image-based sexual abuse, but sociologists, gender-based violence scholars, psychology, comms studies, etc. have been doing this work for at least a decade now. READ US. #AcademicSky

Nerd Alert: I made my first data dashboard with R using Shiny and Flexdashboard. It shows K-5 chronic absenteeism in NYC public schools for the last ten year by demographics. Check it out: alexjparton.shinyapps.io/NYC_chronic_... #datascience #education

Check out this amazing @theonion.com article. Oh...wait..

The fact that the FBI didn’t hold a press conference announcing the largest seizure of self-made explosives in history tells you everything you need to know about race and ideology of the suspect. Wanna guess? www.nytimes.com/2024/12/31/u...

"The massive wage disparities aren’t explained by differences in types of work. Hickel says it’s often assumed that the Global South provides low-skilled labor...in return for high-skilled work in the Global North from scientists, engineers, lawyers, and others with advanced degrees."

BREAKING: Amazon warehouse workers in Garner, NC have filed for a union election after three years of organizing. If they win, RDU1 would be the second unionized warehouse in the U.S.

Destroy this myth. Please share if you have visited and researched in a library this past year! RT And give a shout out to your favorite library you have ever visited.

This post from @alexnpress.bsky.social is just too on the nose of how law enforcement is used and implemented to protect the capital of the obscenely rich.

We desperately need more men in caregiving roles, as @jessgrose.bsky.social argues. And I'd add--to get there, we have to start early, encouraging boys to fill caregiving roles that too often default to girls. Take, for example, a story from my kids' school... 1/ 🧵 www.nytimes.com/2024/12/11/o...

When I was early on writing fiction, I used to submit to lit journals in Courier New. Definitely all rejections. #litsky #booksky #fonts

BREAKING: Starbucks Workers United has authorized a strike. The corporate giant hasn't moved on economic issues in negotiations, and now 98% of @SBWorkersUnited has voted to call a work stoppage “if necessary.” The union has 10,000 workers at 500 stores. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

'It found that despite Amazon's claims of safe working conditions, company data showed that its warehouses have "significantly higher" injury rates than both the industry average and non-Amazon warehouses.' #news #labor #unions www.npr.org/2024/12/16/n...

"On the left, we don’t know how to appeal to people’s deep passions. We think we’re very smart and very critical. But where’s the radical imaginary by which people will be passionately absorbed?" english.elpais.com/culture/2024...

Always surprised how many folk on social media are unaware that highly visible women online regularly get threatened w/ rape and other violence. Happens to every woman w/ a substantial following I know, has for a decade regardless of platform. And no, authorities don’t care and that’s no solution.

"This week, the AI-powered summary falsely made it appear BBC News had published an article claiming Luigi Mangione, the man arrested following the murder of healthcare insurance CEO Brian Thompson in New York, had shot himself. He has not." Wow. #AI #CSS #newsky www.bbc.com/news/article...

Emotional response precedes thought.

'The insider adds, "He’s tall and handsome. A lot of people seem to think he’s pretty attractive — yes, even liberal people like him.”' Just quality journalism right there. people.com/barron-trump...
