Because he taps into their fears, is articulate and a good speaker/debater. And, I think, we've become used to looking for the quickest, easiest answer, that he purports to offer. Easier to challenge than to do/lead.
We need more charisma on the counter.

I loved it for what it is. The performance, choreography, set & props were terrific. I get your points - suffrage particularly. As a show, great, but perhaps not quite the story you (we) know, but that didn't bother me. I'd see it again
