This is how words change, btw. Not by fiat. By creating new realities and sticking labels on them. Or, in this case, by distorting reality and insisting the old words apply to them until people start believing in the Ministry of Truth.

My hot take is... "is this surprising in a linguistics culture as divorced from the discipline's philological foundations as North American linguistics?". Can't help but see this empoverishment in that perspective. Not that similar things aren't happening in e.g. German language departments.
