The worst element of what happened this week isn't even about immigration specifically. It's that Starmer surrendered against populism.

“I woke up with a sense of dread…” — from an EU citizen in the UK on how Labour’s new rhetoric is shaking people’s sense of belonging. Powerful open letter. 👇

COO of Homecare Association Dr Jane Townson decimates Labour's scrapping of care worker visas, "There's no workforce strategy, there's no funding, there's no viable alternative" "Whatever way you look at it we risk walking into a humanitarian and an economic disaster"

People have genuine, serious, concerns which need to be recognised and addressed. The problem is they keep being told that these concerns are caused by immigration, and when you are struggling you will take what you can as a reason. This isn't to say people are stupid or racist, just struggling. 1/

"Anyone who’s ever interacted with any care workers feels a huge debt of gratitude to them, and yes, newsflash, this is irrespective of whether they were born in the UK. If you know any care workers, it’s because they’re caring for you or someone you love."

Starmer's anti-immigrant speech today wasn't just a moral and political embarrassment. It was also an intellectual embarrassment. inews.co.uk/opinion/star...

Ever wondered why some charts are more effective and engaging than others? I’ll be going through all the theory, evidence and principles behind compelling data storytelling from this Wednesday. Free to watch for anyone who is interested: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-fundam...

Josep Borrell explains how the EU is a peace project, and how by Europe paying higher taxes, we have social cohesion and peace

It’s absolutely criminal the way in which successive governments have treated British universities. I can’t remotely fathom why ministers would want to torch one of our few world-leading sectors. How is that “pro-growth”?

The home PSA Prostate Cancer test Cost me £9 & saved my life It works like a COVID home test, but with a fingerprick of blood 97% sensitive at PSA of 4. Yet to meet a British doctor that knows that such tests exist. I keep asking. 🧪 Ladies: An excellent birthday present for any man in your life

What the hell is this government actually doing? A survival guide to a deeply weird administration iandunt.substack.com/p/what-is-th...

Every aspect which is so far being publicised, a standard tactic by politicians prior to formerly launching anything, of Labour's immigration white paper continues to demonstrate this government's lack of knowledge about immigration in general, and knee jerk policies. 1/ www.bbc.com/news/article...

This kid runs circles around the reporter

Pete Hegseth’s culture war hits West Point. Books banned, syllabuses scrubbed, two professors resign in protest, the librarian quit. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/08/u...

Navarro doesn't understand the deal they signed. The text reads: "The United Kingdom and the United States affirm that imported food and agricultural goods must comply with the importing country’s sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) standards and other mutually agreed standards."

This is an unfair, take. It is a thin deal. But, if it HAD been a “full fat” US-UK deal, it would completely scupper any hope of rebuilding trade with the EU, which remains the bigger prize. In the circs, it’s not bad…tho’ admittedly not as “historic” as the leaders were nauseatingly pitching it!

Sat on the floor at the gate at Charleroi. People on laptops x 2 (apparently men), people reading books x 3 (apparently women.)

One of the strangest ironies of the last ten years has been watching Britain immersing itself as deeply as ever in memories of WW2 while proudly turning its back on the project that emerged from it.

Nowt so good as bantering, witty social media...🤣

Vance: "Which regime in the world has civil nuclear power and enrichment without having a nuclear weapon? The answer is - no one." Germany, Netherlands, Brazil and Japan all have civil nuclear power and the ability to enrich uranium. None have nuclear weapons.

The Society for Acute Medicine has serious concerns about unacceptable conditions for older patients in hospital. In a letter to the editor, a reader writes of her vulnerable mother's stay, which included long waits in A&E, and nights on the ward corridor. #NHS

"We ALL treat Reform like they're a new party, they very much aren't! They are UKIP, into Brexit, into Leave, into Reform with the same leader!" @maitlis.bsky.social on the danger of treating Reform as a fresh political force.

Hugely misleading headline in the Daily Mail. This only applies to Indian workers who are seconded to the UK from a company based in India on a short term basis. India nationals applying for jobs based in the UK will not benefit from this convention and it does not disadvantage UK workers

Roughly 17,000 councillors in the UK. Nearly 6500 Labour. Just over 5000 Tory. 3000 Lib Dem. Reform have 799 and suddenly N.F. is being touted by the media as the next Prime Minister? The Green Party have 850 councillors. Why aren't the Green Party being bigged-up by the press? Seriously, why?

Labour have over 6k elected Councillor’s the Tories over 5k, Lib Dem’s over 3k yet the BBC and most other media outlets are acting as if Reform with less than 9O0 ( less than the Greens) are running the country.

The question Europeans, Canadians and Mexicans need to work out the answer to is why Vance keeps trying to provoke a collapse in relations between the US and its closest allies in these meetings and what he and those around him hope to gain from it

Hospital medics - I’m researching a story about Epic, the supplier of electronic patient record systems. Any views? Let me know on or off the record. #journorequest

I'd like an apology from @marycreagh.bsky.social please. She claimed my column on the Planning and Infrastructure Bill was "deeply misleading". She failed to explain why. But it was an accurate explanation of the problems with the Bill. Ministers should not make unsubstantiated and untrue claims.

Thames Water Prospective Private Equity Owner KKR Donated $1m to Trump Inauguration. Business model: profiteering, price hikes, low investment, high leverage, asset-stripping, excessive returns. In US KKR group sanctioned 217 times, fined $678m for anti-social practices. Can't address water woes.
