Please share this widely: send an email to [email protected] with 5 things your favorite federal agency does that the private sector can’t or won’t

AOC: And he is running around because he thinks he got a bank account with a lot of zeros in it that it makes him some kind of super citizen. I don't think so.

Yes, please.

We should hang our heads in shame.

I am really outdone. The Maryland National Guard cannot celebrate Frederick Douglass, the state’s native son and perhaps the greatest American this nation ever produced, because he’s Black and his chosen birthday happened to fall during Black History Month. (Ask me why he had to choose is b-day)

i helped develop/run policy workforce capacity-building programs for the CDC when i was there—training early career scientists on how to do policy (and to do it better) the damage done here to public health cannot be quickly or easily reversed. it will be felt for many years & it will cost lives.

Omg

It’s amazing that one person can run six companies, manage the entire federal bureaucracy, and be model parent to 13 children. Truly a triumph of time management.

Even worse incompetence: they accidentally fired, then apparently today un-fired, hundreds of the people who manage America's nuclear weapons.

These are incredible, celebratory times for cancer AND measles

This is the story of so many blockbuster drugs. Funded by NIH. Privatized, prices hiked, fortunes made on the backs of taxpayers, scientists, and civil servants

The gene therapy Zolgensma helped children born with spinal muscular atrophy grow up to run and play. But the cost was stunning: $2M per dose. While taxpayers and small charities funded the drug’s early development, executives, venture-capital backers and a pharma giant have reaped the profits.

I bet a lot of Californians would pay money to the Danes to help defray the cost

HYPOTHETICAL: We get a handful of artists to create a set of posters, each focusing on a different aspect of the science-related shit going on rn. We make them inexpensive enough that you don't feel... precious about them. You might... put them up...ephemerally... How do you feel about that?

I’m not a mathematician or anything, but it seems like this adds up to Republicans dramatically increasing the deficit while the wealthy pay a lot less in taxes. No wonder Trump wanted to eliminate the debt ceiling during his presidency.

“The walkout was organized in part by an eighth-grade student who is not yet 14 years old, she and her mother said in a joint phone interview…The student said that she and other students decided to act after seeing how Trump’s executive orders would target diversity events.” Tiny badasses

it is genuinely incredible that all you have to do is scratch the surface and it becomes clear that each of these guys is a huge piece of shit

We cannot ignore how shockingly abnormal it is for a private citizen — who himself has contracts with the federal government — to dispatch a private army of executives, data experts and recent high schoolers to dictate policies to federal agencies. www.democracydocket.com/opinion/elon...

This is massive and will have a cascading effect.

Trump just nuked science in the United States. This will have devastating consequences and generational damage to scientific training. arstechnica.com/science/2025...

What if the problem all along was the first word, not the second

Last night, I wrote in my newsletter, Civil Discourse, about Trump's new coup. I base my analysis on the facts and the law, not hyperbole. We are at a serious tipping point. I hope you'll subscribe if you feel the same way, or if you just want to learn more. joycevance.substack.com

this is theft on an unimaginable scale

There are a lot of trans veterans who rely on VA services. This isn’t a child. This is a veteran faced with losing access to critical services and being erased from the eyes of their government. Previous administrations did everything in their power to reduce veteran suicides. That’s over.

Question: Is air traffic controller a “lower productivity job in the public sector”? How about doctors and nurses treating veterans? FBI agents? Health inspectors?

He has zero authority to do this. One starts to wonder if the first march in the streets will just be focused on getting this rando out

If you wanted no leaks you should have gone into Settings -> Security -> Configure privacy & security -> Privacy options -> Other -> Configure -> Media interface and clicked “Disallow.” The Leak setting is on by default but we understand your privacy is important so we’ve made it easy to opt out

Surreal being a trans person on this website this week. Every single one of my trans friends is making emergency preparations in case Trump bans our health care while fighting off existential dread and depression, and 99% of the cis people i follow seemingly have nothing to say about the trans EOs.

Now he’s coming for the Americans with Disabilities Act www.ndrn.org/resource/dca...

“NPR has identified dozens of defendants with prior convictions or pending charges for crimes including rape, sexual abuse of a minor, domestic violence, manslaughter, production of child sexual abuse material and drug trafficking.” www.npr.org/2025/01/30/n...

This part of the government keeps us safe while we fly. This part of the government keeps us safe while we're on the ocean. This part of the government keeps us safe from infectious diseases. This part of the government keeps us safe when we pick up our prescriptions. This part of the... ...

just want to take a step back from the relentless churn of news to recognize how fucking terrifying things are for trans people right now. and i just want to say that i will always fight for you—in my capacity as a journalist and as a human being—and i’m here for whatever the trans community needs.

Yep.

Guys, I hate to even suggest the possibility, but I’m starting to wonder just a teensy-weensy little bit whether maybe, just maybe, FFOTUS wasn’t totally upfront and forthcoming about Project 2025 during the campaign

We’re living through Deconstruction. I don’t know what else to call it — it’s an assault on the New Deal, Great Society, Reconstruction, and every other rights movement I can think of.

Now every federal agency is in the hands of elon musk. What could go wrong?

📌Just talked to a former colleague of mine who now works inside the government helping to keep people fed (re: Farm Bill), who is describing working conditions there as: "Horrid." 📌Where the fuck is the reporting on this? Because A LOT of people are getting hurt. And more WILL BE hurt.

Trump's federal hiring freeze threatens to understaff the Veterans Crisis Line, a critical resource for those who’ve served. Veterans deserve reliable support, ESPECIALLY in times of crisis! MORE: www.npr.org/2025/01/23/n...
