I am delighted to share my first PhD paper! We found that Key Biodiversity Areas cover the distributions of the world’s terrestrial birds excellently, representing 99.7%. #KBAs are incredibly useful for conservation planning and policy. 🧪🦤🦉🌍🌐 conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....

We're hiring a fieldworker to help with some of our projects in Wytham Woods this spring. Wonderful place to work (and live), especially in the spring. Get in touch if you'd like to know more.

Things are so chaotic and stomach-churning in our world right now. I find a lot of solace out in nature. I want to share a tiny slice of that with you. My book, #Phenology is available today! You can purchase it for 30% off *today only* with code MITP30 through penguinrandomhouse.com

🦋 New paper out in @funecology.bsky.social! 🦋 Using the Orange-tip butterfly in the UK🦋, we test a key assumption of many species’ distribution models (SDMs): that climate effects on species’ distributions are equivalent over space🌍 versus time⏰ doi.org/10.1111/1365-2435.70005 🧵👇

Fieldwork opportunity: We're looking to hire a field assistant for the www.phenoweb.org project starting 1 April. Please repost. #phenology #fieldwork #birdringing

Ok people. I’m drawing silhouettes this afternoon. If you have a paper coming up and you are in need of a #silhouette please let me know and I will have it ready today. As always I upload all my silhouettes to phylopic.org I also have tutorials on how to put a silhouette in a plot in R.

Last week of winter moth trapping along the Phenoweb transect between Edinburgh and Inverness. We aim to study the spatial scale of local adaptation to oak phenology 🦋🌳🧬 with @rona-learmonth.bsky.social, @allyphillimore.bsky.social, @nilomr.bsky.social (and @sheldonbirds.bsky.social back in Oxford)

Interested in a PhD? Still time to get in touch and discuss. Lots of opportunity to shape questions in areas related to Ecology, Evolution & Behaviour

🚨 NEW PAPER ALERT! 🚨 What if there’s more to a classic model system than we thought?... 🌳 -> 🐛 -> 🐤 My latest paper, out now in #Oecologia, re-examines the case of the winter moth—an emblematic ecological study species. 👇🧵 1/22 link.springer.com/article/10.1... #phenology #ecology #entomology

Extremely frustrating thing which took too long to figure out: If you use geodata::worldclim_tile to download bioclimatic data, the variables are misnamed and in the wrong order. They're labelled BIO1-19, but actually represent BIO1, BIO10, BIO11 (i.e. alphabetically). Left=original. Right=fixed

Are insects declining? 🐛🐞🕷️🦋 Are they becoming active earlier in the season? ❄️🍃🍂 Are they less abundant on non-native plants, or in urban areas? 🌿🏙️ Help us find out! caterpillarscount.unc.edu #CitizenScience #insects #phenology

I've got 5-6 months money for a Postdoc ecological modeller, linking mathematical (translated via statistical) models to insect lab popn. time-series data; starts Jan 2025. Must be UK-based (not cost/time effective for applicants to get such a short-term visa 😔). Please contact me if interested! 🌍🧪

Jamie Weir has a fascinating paper from his PhD on winter moths just out in Oecologia. In a large feeding experiment he finds that oak is a relatively poor host; a result that makes the large numbers of winter moth we typically find on oak all the harder to explain: link.springer.com/article/10.1...
