Wild how the Fed chair saying that *entire regions of the United States* won’t be able to get a mortgage in the next decade barely registered as a news event

“We attacked a foreign people and treated them like rebels. As you know, it's all right to treat barbarians barbarically. It's the desire to be barbaric that makes governments call their enemies barbarians.” ― Bertolt Brecht

...this is just beyond the pale. "Grief is not just about loss, it's about the erosion of control. And these AI obituaries just take another thing from mourners -- the ability to choose how and when and by whom their loved one's story is told." Rebecca Soffer, author of The Modern Loss Handbook

I refuse to give the NYT my eyeballs, so I can't speak to the specifics of this article. But any historians attempting to use AI for either writing or research should be run out of the field. AI is inherently unable to do anything we need it to do to understand and communicate history.

Boycott the FIFA World Cup in the USA next year. Leave their arenas empty. Don’t spend your hard earned money in that country. If you want to watch the games come to Canada or go to Mexico, where you’ll be welcome and well treated. I grew up in Brazil playing soccer and I’m loving it.

BREAKING: A federal judge reversed National Institutes of Health's terminations of hundreds of critical research grants that were canceled because of their alleged connection to disfavored topics, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and gender identity. This is a major win for public health.

This is the fate of science and scientists in 2025 in the US. It will take multiple generations at best to recover…🧪

Oh Florida Man. Never stop. (But do put down that poor octopus. He never did anything to you.)

“Does the US President’s social media post mean people should evacuate Tehran in a serious, bombs-are-imminent sort of way or a silly, he’ll forget about it in the morning sort of way?” is an insane, nightmarish situation to be in

...lovely.

There are far worse people, and stupider ones (I will charitably assume), but can we say these are bad and stupid people?

As one who had a mother much like this, as one who knows this from the inside, I feel this post viscerally. There were days whn my mom asked me why I didn't write anything much "these days". And I could only smile hollowly. There was very little room left for writing...

…in which the Author wants a Dragon… Years ago, I watched, completely unsuspecting, a little animated movie called "How to Train Your Dragon" I don't know what I expected. It was certainly not to fal in love. No, not with a Viking halfpint named Hiccup. With a dragon. A goofy, derpy, valiant,…

"This is what you get when you order your 79th birthday celebration from Temu, but didn't pay the tariffs."

What happens when you try to take a picture of a dragon and a photobombing "what'cha doing?" cat insists on being a part of the action...

BREAKING: Reports on Orange Mussolini’s parade attendance are in… 200,000 were expected — only 8,647 bothered to showed up. 😂 Meanwhile, everywhere else…👇

books are like eggs: some hatch into lizards : some stink real bad : delicious and rich though commonplace : you can have one every day : infinite preparations can make them into anything : anybody can make one but a practiced hand can make them great :you can throw them at enemies to send a message

I came... for this moment.

The Creation of Monty #Caturday

...jeebus. twenty bucks gets some insane nutter the "right" to abuse anyone they want in any way they choose. It doesn't matter if in the aftermath it turns out that they weren't "real". The trauma will have been inflicted, the damage will have been done...

I don't know about anybody else, but whenever I see an ad written in bad English, I'm deeply suspicious of whatever it's selling. NB--This is aimed much less at people wrestling with a foreign language than at the many homegrown illiterati. You can't make subject and verb agree? Fuck off, Charlie!

Truth. Can confirm.

"I said HAPPY CATURDAY. So I can take that off the to do list. So there."

[Cough] let me just say that... on the other hand... I'd better just shut up now...

THIS A UNITED STATES SENATOR ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF CALIFORNIA BEING PHYSICALLY SHOVED OUT OF A MEETING ABOUT WHAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS DOING TO THE BIGGEST CITY IN OUR STATE.

“lol if America does socialized medicine we’ll have wait times.” Hey, galaxy brain, I have been having 3-4 weekslong periods and can’t even get in to see a gynecologist before I leave in August. The wait times are here.

I feel it's important to admit that even those of us who have written over twenty novels still sometimes look at the day's work and flail like a toddler, yelling I DON' WANNA. Discipline is good and necessary, but the inner sloth-beast is never fully vanquished.

All the people I still know in LA laugh and laugh when they hear that "Los Angeles is burning." I made a couple of maps to show just how tiny and localized the protests are. GOPers are working really hard to make an excuse for declaring martial law. People should be very wary of that.

It’s official. Studio Execs are now using Chat GPT to evaluate screenplays. Here’s proof from a friend’s pass letter: Not only is it vague and unhelpful, it references one specific — an antique camera. The problem? THERE’S NO ANTIQUE CAMERA IN THE FUCKING SCRIPT.
